Tint will not lift tint. I keep reading this BUT where I work they often use say a 6 or a 7 shade (20 vol) with either a 9 or a 10 (30 vol) for 2 tone foils. I have seen this done lots of times on hair treated exactly the same way a couple of months previously. Now then if tint will not lift tint how come the lighter shade covers any hair previously coloured by the 6 or 7? In other words it looks great!

ok ,so you are talking about foil hi/lites in two shades ,not over a full head tint? sometimes where the hair is dry or has been in the sun ,tint will lift tint . if its in hi-lights ,then theres probably some natural hair to lift up as well ,and the whole effect is more softer and more blended ,so if any didnt lift it probably wont show. if the client had slices in these colours, and a lighter one went over the darker one ,then there probably would be more noticable banding .

Yes mostly people have just 2 tone foils but a few also have a 7 or 8 all over the root area then highlights with a 7 plus a 9 or a 10.

Hi, as a rule,
colour manufactures say that as a general rule
tint wont lift tint ,
on saying that it also depends on how much tint build up is on the hair especially with the darker shades,

eg so if you were wanting to put in some creamy highlights in a head of tinted hair from say a base 5 or 6 then it may be difficult getting the mid lengths and ends to lift up to a creamy blonde using tint alone,

you may get some degree of lift using high lift tint but this depends on how much build up of darker tint has been on the hair before hand,

generally if you try to lighten tinted darker hair
with lighter tint to a blonde shade
it will never lift to the same degree as it would on virgin untreated hair

If ever in doubt of the lifting effects of tint upon tint
always do the necessary test pieces first ,

hope this made sense  x minky

Just to add a little more, tint molecules are attracted to tint molecules, they like hanging out together and don't typically break each other up. This is why "tint wont lift tint" Unless the hair has been sensitised, either through pre lightening or sunbleach, a higher level of tint won't lighten hair.

A lighter level tint applied straight over a freshly done tint will go darker. (yes, we have done this I had to prove it to students) leave the same strand out for 6-8 weeks with "normal" exposure, we shampooed our strand every other day and left it to dry naturally, on the weekends we placed it in a window ledge where it would be exposed to sunlight then we tried to lighten it with tint. It did lighten slightly and had a slight golden/gingery cast to it even using an ash based level 9 tint and 9%.

Sooooo, tint doesn't really lift tint, at least not well, especially if you haven't tried loads of test strands.

Hi, I would just like to start by giving you a background history on my hair. I have dark brown hair and have been lightening with bleach to a platinum blond for last 15 to 20 years. I have become an expert with lighting my hair to a point were I have been doing this myself at home for the last 10 years. As I know my hair by now, and know exactly how long to keep the bleach on for and when to wash it off and what shade of toner to use in order to get the desired color.

Some hair dressers do not leave the bleach in long enough which leaves my hair orange and this cannot be toned enough to get the platinum blond I want. Therefore I have given up and started doing my own hair as I understand how much my hair can take.

I found that with continued use of bleaching has left my hair damaged. I also need to wait 2 months before I can successfully bleach the regrowth area again in order to prevent overlapping on the already blonded hair. This is hard as I am having to go through a very dark regrowth for some time before I can color it.

I wanted to try and lighten my hair with a high lift tint. I found that this did not lift enough leaving my hair very coppery. I have a few questions in relation to this issue.

First question. Is there any other high lift tints on the market that will lighten hair up to 5 or 6 shades. I am hoping that by the time I get another regrowth the first tinted hair may lighten another shade just by the normal fading of wear and tear, washing ect.

Secondly If the high lift tint was applied to the hair with only about a few millimeters of regrowth would this help it lighten it up to the 6 shades as it is closer to the scalp and is warmer.

thirdly, I wanted to try another method, if the high lift tints only lighten 4 to 5 shades then is it possible to lighten hair firstly with a bleach to bring it up a few shades then apply the high lift tint to bring it up a further 4 to 5 levels. creating the level 10 blond with this method. the reason I would like to do it this way is creating less damage to the hair by not leaving the bleach on the hair until the hair turns very blond, secondly I can maybe do this with only a centimeter of regrowth because I will only be leaving the bleach on until the hair just lifts, even if it ends up overlapping in some areas the bleach is not left on long enough to cause breakage in those areas. Then I can apply the tint to lift it further to the desired blond with minimal damage to the hair.

I would really like some help in this area and want to know if this may work or do you have any other methods that would work just as well.
