Hello! Not sure if i am posting in the right place, apologies if not.

I was looking for some advise. Myself and my friend are photographers, and have just set up a studio, we are planning on doing Makeover shoot/ models etc. I am toying with the idea of doing a make up artistry course so i can do the makeover etc. I've always had a keen interest in it, and have been doing some research over the past few days...but i didn't realize how much went in to make up so now im not sure!
So i was wondering if you guys could give me a few tips really for a complete newbie! Any book recommendations etc?
I have seen a course local to me at the make up training school in telford? Anyone studied there?

Any tips/ advise would be much appreciated! Thank you. x

As for a book recommendation, I was one of the models in "The Complete Guide to Make-up" by Suzanne Le Quesne back in 2004, and that seems to be a pretty good book, and fairly comprehensive too.

From what I have heard, the make-up school in Telford is meant to be pretty good. Although I do not have experience of it personally.

Interesting to hear that you are in the area though. I've done a fair bit of body painting, so it could be cool to collaborate on a body painting shoot sometime if you know of any models who would be interested in adding body painting images to their portfolio.

sorry to hijack this post, what page you on ruth - i have that book right in front of me now, lol !!

to the original poster, i would recommend the book ruth mentioned also - it covers everything, including photographic makeup.

i would also do a foundation course in makeup to learn the basics and be able to gain insurance, then a specialist course in photographic makeup although you will have covered a fair bit in the foundation

cpl places i can think off top of my head are : london media academy and makeup international, you'll have to google them both dont know the web sites im afraid - my friend trained in photographic makeup at the media academy and now works on magazine shoots etc .. they also teach photography so think they know their stuff

HTH

Hi Blush

I'm on page 179 (male to female gender change), 195 (Werewolf), and page 231 (airbrush back tattoo) - aagh there are some pics of me in "boy mode" in those too, in the "before" pics!

Most of the pics in the book were shot on the weekend of 8th/9th May 2004, at the 3 Kings make-up studio in North Camp, Farnborough, Hampshire; alas they had to shut their make-up shop last year due to the evil credit crunch :( They were a great little make-up company too, got a load of my body painting stuff from there. Think they are still doing casualty simulation though, so that is some consolation...

oh yes, can see it now .. was only looking at pics on p 179 the other day didnt realise it was you, lol

i knew of the 3 kings, used to do a bit of face painting etc .. but now much prefer "older" models to the little wrigglers, lol

Ah cool! Wasn't so keen on the pic they used on p179 though; there are some better ones on my web site, Ruth Mills - Transvestite, Fetish and Bodypainting Model - although those were taken with my camera rather than the one they were mainly using for the book (although I sent them a copy of my pics aftewards)... there seemed to be a problem with the lighting with their camera and it seems to have got the colour balance a bit too "warm"...

That's fab that you used to do face painting too; I've always preferred "older" models too, hence the body painting - I'd much rather spend say 5 hours painting something really intricate on someone who is happy to stay still for that time, rather than zillions of wriggly kids' faces!

i think the photo looks fine, we are always critical of our own images when we see it on print or film - i couldnt bear to watch my wedding video, let alone frame any pictures - looked like i had a double chin, which was completely ridiculous and now 4 yrs on i wish i looked that slim and fresh faced, lol
i started to train with bibi @ the london school of face painting - did several of the classes which i can highly recommend but just wasnt for me and went on to train as mua - which i love to bits!!
have just sold the last of my face painting stuff and have bought more items for my kit, so all worked out in the end, lol

Ah I know of Bibi although don't think I've met her.

Bet your wedding photos/video look fab though. Actually I'm a big fan of our wedding pics from when Sonia and I got married just under 4 years ago...
