To wax or not to wax?

I have a dilemma and would welcome some advice/opinions. Sorry this is a long post, but I wanted to set the scene!


I am a level 3 qualified beauty Therapist and nail tech and I run my business from our converted double garage and attached workshop. Since January my daughter has joined me and has her treatment room in the attached converted workshop. We are both self-employed and run our own separate businesses under the same roof.

I am about to re-design my treatment and price list as I have had a re-branding so I am looking to fine tune the treatments we offer. At the moment I offer Manicure, pedicure, gel extensions, overlays and gel polish, facials, lash Lifting, lash and brow tinting, brow waxing, spray tanning and waxing. My daughter specialises in makeup, lash extensions, brow treatments and also offers waxing and spray tans.

The thing is I really don't enjoy waxing! I originally trained in 1997., did another full waxing course 2011 and did a refresher course in 2016 but I'm still not confident, especially bikini waxing. (I only offer basic bikini, but still dread doing them). The majority of my clients are for nails and a few of them occasionally have some waxing done as well. I can cope with this as I already know them and feel comfortable around them but I dread getting a waxing booking from a new client. My daughter doesn't mind waxing but in all honesty she hasn't done a lot since finishing her level 2 beauty course in 2017 so would really need to do some more in depth training but she is already really busy with her lash extension and makeup clients and I'm not sure she could cope if she started getting lots of waxing clients as well.

I know that I probably should go and enrol on a better 1-2-1 waxing course but to be totally honest it's just not where my interest lies. I really want to be doing more facials and am doing further product training to assist with this.

So, my question is, would I be stupid to drop waxing from my treatment list? (I would still do my regular ladies). I don't feel happy offering a service that I'm not confident in, yet I'm always reading how profitable waxing is. The whole point of setting up my own salon was so I could do the treatments I wanted to do and work the hours I want to so my heart tells me don't do it. It's just my head that's questioning it!

I think you've answered your own question- drop waxing.
You could always just list lip, chin & brow waxing if you're ok with these .

Let's face it, there's no shortage of other salons who could do the waxing for them.
I think it's becoming more common, clients going to different salons for the different specialties now.

I agree with CFBS , remove it from your treatment list and just do your clients that have had you wax them since you started. Then as you will find you will keep up your wax skill set if things change in the future.
Brow, lip, chin are quick good cash generators so deffo keep them.
Regarding profit from waxing - it really is the best paid service per hour than anything else i do . Tot up how much you can get for
1/2 leg wax
bikini
under arm
eyebrow - plus you may add on tint of brow and lashes. Do the maths and that time wise it can take as little as 50 minutes.

Also, being an old codger I am far too old to want to do intimate waxing. Yuck . It is not for me. I simply do a basic bikini, but more like a landing strip or a teeny weeny triangle . That's it. Clients can go else where for anymore off.....it is just not for me. The beauty of being self employed is that we can choose what we do. So there really is no need for another wax training session .

Thank you both! I think I did know the answer, I just needed some reassurance that it was the right thing to do for me!
Apart from my regular ladies I already steer any eyebrow waxing over to my daughter as she loves doing eyebrows! So as suggested, I'll keep facial waxing on the price list, but drop the rest and just do my existing ladies to keep them happy.

There are a good number of very knowledgeable people on here who I can always rely on for honest trustworthy advice. I have learnt so much from them and it has made me want to help others if I'm able to

I dropped waxing when I opened my salon and I’m glad I did. I kept brow, lip and chin wax but don’t do any body waxing except for a few people who have been coming to me since i qualified. It’s worked out well and I agree with CFBS comment clients will go to salons that specialise in different areas
