Toe nail has come off, help!

My boyfriend dropped stone thing on his toe, he went to a&e and the put a needle up the toe nail to drain the blood.

The next day his toe nail has come of (big toe) we are going on holiday tomorrow is there anything we can do to make it look better but more importantly has anyone got any advice on how to look after it? As we are away I'm worried he might get an infection or something?

Would it be better to put a plaster over it or leave it uncovered? What's the best way to clean it or is it better to leave it?

Would appreciate any help, have attached a photo- apologies as it looks gross x x

That's pretty nasty must have hurt! Tell you boyfriend to apply antiseptic lotion to the toe and surround skin three times a day ( to a clean toe washed in water first). Cover the toe in a plaster though a tubular bandage would be better you can get these at the pharmacy.
If his toe appears to be changing in appearance this could be a sign of infection! What you should look for is the following
- pus
- bleeding
- toe hot to touch
- blackening of the skin around the injury
- smell like a rotten smell
If any of the above appear then infection could be setting in and he should go straight back to the doctors.
It would be advisable not to swim in public pools but the sea water is ok!
