Top Coat Help!

Hello, I am just curious if you can put a gel top coat over a french polish?

I have done it on some of the tips in my nail garden, but they have been dry for MONTHS. The one time I did it on a nail that I had just painted that day, it crackled the pain under the gel. So I am thinking it is ok but you need to make sure the pain is VERY VERY dry 1st and be sure to cap the edges.
