Tracing fake facebook accounts

This is a complete long shot but here goes!

Anyone know if there is a way of tracing where a fake account was made? Like an IP address or anything? Or can the police look into it?

Long story short, someone is sending messages to several people & there are children involved in these messages. Nothing pornographic/violent just mentioning their names so they have onviously done research which is oretty scary.

Anyone had to deal with this before? I understand this is a weird subject but just wanted advice before we decide whether to get police involved

Facebook in the beginning had ip addesses showing, but alas no more....but are available to the police should they make the request to facebook. In the first instance take all proof you have to the police and lodge your complaint, and if any further evidence becomes available take this too and they shall investigate if neccessary x

Would we need an email address or just their fb account? Also, if they are using their phone no ip address will show will it?

Thankyou. We have now 3 very long forms of evidence (3 conversations to 3 people). They always send a message then block from replying then proceed to sending more messages. It has been going on since feb and i just think its sick. I want it sorting but not in my hands to sort. Not even sure if police can do anything x

Already reported. They just make another account so pretty pointless i have no idea why people are so sick in the head to make accounts up in the first place! Won't the police just say 'well delete facebook then' to end it? X

In an ideal world that is the answer and may well solve the problem, but it doesn't help you right now. Even if you go to the police you have an official record of the complaint and have a means to take if further if you need to x

I'm pretty sure the police can trace phones too so they may be able to help but if you block the person then set your account to private they won't be able to message you unless you are friends I don't think =s so if the police can't help hopefully that will at least give you some privacy xx

It may solve the problem if all of us involved deleted it, but that would mean loosing contact with friends i dont see regularly/no contact numbers. Would also mean closing my business page down. Think we may need to get police involved after all x

We cant block them cos as soon as they have done sending the messages they delete the account. They also make several accounts in different names so even if we did get the chance to block one, odds on another one will be created. Account is set to private so messages to me have stopped its just to the other people now. Also involves me & my son which is why im not happy x

thats actually great advice, I have really tight privacy on my personal page, can't be pm'd unless you are a friend of mine, you can search for me but won't be able to find me by name and can only add me if you are a friend of a friend

this is real freaky - my friend had her photos taken from her page - and someone had set up a fake profile with these pics using a different name ??? They were even updating the pics as my friend did ... Closed down now but I'm sure he/she will set another up with someone else's pics - that's scary thought !!!!

The account involved with these messages just has the one photo (bit of a give away that its a fake imo) but i'm guessing the photo isn't who the person actually is. There really is some weirdos about :/ x
