Training for hair extensions please help!!!

Hi Everybody
I have recently just become qualified in acrylic nail extensions, warm waxing, and eye brow/lash enhancements.
I am starting my own business and its all pretty new to me.

i would love to do some hair extension training so i could offer this service also, but there are so many systems out there its a bit mind bending!
does anybody have any preferences on the best system to train in?
Also im not a hair dresser! ......will this effect me being able to train?
If i am able to do a course will i be able to offer this treatment to my customers without a basic hair dressing qualification?
do you have to offer a cut and style after the extensions have been put in. or can you offer the extensions only?
if aybody has any advice it would be very helpful

Personally i would be dubious about going to a hair extensionist who was not also a hairdresser or at least very skilled at hair.

The reason for this is purely because if you are not trained to cut hair,and you do not know about scalp and skin disorders, how can you offer a professional service?

That said, most places WILL train you even if you arent qualified. Take a look at balmain, great lengths, racoon etc

Different peole prefer different brands but essentially all the big names in extensions are the same - strand by strnd hot bonded application

you dont have to be a hairdresser to be an extensionist but i think the two really go hand in hand......they may teach u how to blend when u first attach them but how will you feel doing a maintenance visit of a cut and blow dry 4-6 weeks later???

Hi there

I am a hairdresser but i dont offer hair extensions. But I will give you my view for what its worth. You will probs hate me , but thats what we are here for: to give opinions, views etc.

I know there are some companies out there that will train you in extensions if you are not a hairdresser, but personally and this is just my opinion, i cant see how anyone can be successful if they cant cut , razor cut,colour, or blowdry and finish the hair to a professional standard , and by that i mean to a standard of a proper hairdresser, who will also have the knowledge of hair types, condition, scalp disorders,colour knowledge, giving the client advice on alternate styles and advice on how to style their own hair inbetween visits, the list can go on and on.

What hapens when the client comes back to you requesting a different style or a completete re-style jobby?
What happens when the client asks you a question that you cant answer,because you aren't qualified to answer it!

I am not slating hair extentionists who have no hairdressing qualifications/experience at all. Its each to their own. This is just my opinion.

As a client I would go with someone who knows how to 'do' my hair rather than someone who has been taught how to put extensions in, cos lets face it its not rocket science.

As a hairdresser, i have had to put many a clients hair back to a reasonable state after they have been at the hands of a hair extentionist who cant cut or colour or give appropriate advice .

My honest opinion is every man to their own job.

A nail tech is a nail tech, who specialises in nails, after they have qualified within a professional company and gone through rigourous stages of training.
A hair extentionist is a specialist who specialises in hair extensions, after they have qualifed as a professional hairdresser.

I choose not to do hair extensions because of that very reason, and i have been hairdressing for 27 years!.
