I'm doing a VTCT certificate in nail extensions at college and the kit is pants! The brush supplied was so big I could have decorated my house with it, the tips supplied were the cheapest of the cheap with wells the size of Wales! The only nail prep product was a sanitising spray and a cheap cuticle pusher. Has anyone else experienced this?

I've had to buy more and more products to my kit which considering it was quite expensive to begin with means the training has proved far more expensive than I first thought.

Also Dream L&p - any good? This was supplied with the kit so I don't really know any different but I've heard good things about some other brands and not really sure what to try.

Hi Trish

First welcome to the site.

As a college Lecture I have often came across this problem of training kits. This is not the fault of your tutor but what the college has decided to use as kits for the student which sometimes not the best but a bit of this and a bit of that.

Not all classes/college have this problem I was one of the lucky tutors and had the chance to advise the prowers that be we needed quality product to enhance or students learning experience. I do wish that one day this would be the case for all students to use a quality product within the college environment.

I suppose I can dream

I did notice this with the beauty therapy level 3's that did enhancements on some of my level 2 buddies last week, the products used were, shall we say, the cheaper end of the market (actually a product I first trained with - and nearly gave up altogether). I think it sets people up to fail. A couple of sets were really quite good, the rest, well, bless em they tried, but I'm sure the results would have been much better with high end products. The better quality products and tools are much easier to use imho.

Hi, welcome to the site. Yes we had the same problem with our kit when I did my NVQ, but I was lucky as our tutor was a Creative Master and insisted on only using their L&P, as the college wanted to retain her they agreed, but the rest of the kit was useless.

many large dist, supply collages with collage kits, ezflow creative, entiy., etc. They have top end products to get you started, and usually come at a very good price. Hvae a chat with your tutor with view to contacting them , or contact them yourself and see what they can do......... you may get a very good deal!!

I can really see your flustration on this and have heard it so many times.

I never understand why collages dont spend more time resoursing theses, most large comapny are more than happy to support , after all they are future customers !

Surely in a college environment though the students are fairly naff shall we say when first learning something. Therefore given that the "high end" products often re accompanied by the "high end" price surely it's better to have the cheaper stuff?

Once competant then move onto something of greater quality

I had the exact same problem last year - I was supplied with a truly horrible brush (just a guess, yours is marbled pink handle?).
I used dream at college and struggled quite a bit. I'm back this year for my level 3 and was feeling pretty low about L&P as I thought I was sooooo bad. Been using IBD this year and I am way better because of it. I think that is a mid-range product.

My advice is buy yourself a new brush for definite - I got nsi No.8 round royal precision brush and I love it.

My college wouldn't let me use my own L&P on clients, it had to be theirs. The brush did help a lot though.

Hope this helps x x x x
