hi geeks,
i hope you can give me some advice? i rent a room in a hair salon only doing spray tanning which im slowly building up clients and im really enjoying it! but recently a beauty therapist has a room in the same salon offering all beauty aspects which is fine of course but yesterday when i came in she is also doing spray tanning! worse still out comes one of the girls i normally tan out her room! i find this totally unfair and im a bit peed off! should i be? or is this just normal? its now like competition in same salon for gods sake! we are all self employed in this salon so not sure how to go about approaching this with her and the salon owner/manager....any advice would be fantastic...im really not sure what to do now, feel really deflated
thankyou xx

I'd be peed off too!
I'd have a word with the salon manager and explain the situation. Has she only just started doing spray tans? Was she doing spray tans as soon as she started?Seeing as you exclusively do spray tanning then it's not really fair.
What's the point in having someone do only one treatment and then having someone else doing them in the same salon.
You need to speak to the salon owner asap!

That's just completely wrong!

I started off by renting rooms and now have my own salon. I remember when something similar happened to me, I approached the salon owner and they rectified the solution. Actually it's happened to me twice now and both times I spoke to owner asap.

I doubt the salon has enough clientelle for both of you to make good money from tans. Nor do you want someone else profiting from your hard work and stealing your clients in the same salon!

Speak to the salon owner, if they don't rectify the situation it's time to leave.

What if the other girl makes £80 from tans next week? Would the salon owner take £80 off your rent?

You need team work. This is a conflict of interests.

Good luck x

i was there first then she rented the room next door a couple of months later, she did not include spray tans when she first came, the first i noticed was yesterday! thats the thing im only doing spray tans so need all the custom i can get, another thing is no offence to fake bake but that is what she is offering and im doing sienna x and when people walk in or phone they will recognise that name straight away as sienna x is not that recognisable so they will go for fake bake will they not?

good point Redchick, i will put that matter of rent issue to owner/manager on tuesday! there is def not enough spray tan business to share in one salon! its crazy!

How come she has only just started doing them? Has she trained?
You really need to speak to the salon owner. Is she aware of what is going on? She is getting 2 lots of rent. She isn't going to want to lose half that rent if you have to leave. Until you have spoken to her, you won't know what to do about the problem.
Sienna x is a big name too and people will have heard of it. Yes Fake Bake is a big name but i personally don't like it. I stocked it once and it didn't go down to well.
Sometimes too i don't think clients know too much about names! They go to get waxed and they've probably never heard of the wax. They go to get their nails done and a lot of them don't know the names of the produts. The important thing is that they get a good service and are happy with the result and then they will come back.
I use Nouvatan which is relatively new and my clients come back again and again. They don't really care what the products called-they love the service, they love their tan and they love how long it lasts and they always come back :)

yes she is trained she has been in the beauty business for 10 years! thats why i wanted advice on how to approach her and the owner without looking like a right fool Angelina, im really proud of the way i do my business and ive never had a complaint since, the girl who came out her room works in the salon too but i thought she was really pleased with her tans i gave her as she came to me every week since i started! i will def be speaking to owner on tuesday but i really want to go prepared and sound really confident in any comeback if you know what i mean, my friends say to stick her room but its not that easy moving on and ive worked hard at building up my clients

I would think that unless you both signed a contract that has a clause in it against competitive behaviour, you do not have a leg to stand on.
In the same respect, you could go and do a beauty course and set up in competition. As hard as sounds, all is fair in love and war.

It is no different to having a salon full of self employed stylists or beauty therapists. They are in the same trade. I was a self employed stylist for 2 years and it is very competitive.

If I were you, I would maybe have a quiet, rational word with your boss and see if a compromise can be worked out. If not, I would look for new premises and if that wasn't possible I would add to my list of skills.

What a horrible situation to be in.I do feel for you.I think as the last poster has said it will be difficult if no clause has been included in your contract however I do think that as mentioned, having a quiet word with the owner and explaining that if you lose clients to this therapist then you will have to go as you wont have funds to pay rent.I'm sure there should be a compromise.I also think there are the ethics about poaching clients which this therapist has done.

Don’t worry about looking a fool hun. You’re only standing up for yourself and your business, jus something you have to do.
Maybe the best way to prepare for this talk is to think of the worst scenario. The owner doesn’t see your point of view and you can both do spray tanning there.
Would you really stay? I’m guessing the beautician is there far more than you, and you go in to spray when you have bookings. So she could then do any walk ins.
There won’t be enough business for both of you, so you would be continuing to pay rent for somewhere where you won’t make enough money.
If the owner doesn’t see your point of view then they are being very unreasonable and unfair to you, could you really continue doing business with them? The beautician has lots of different services to allow her to make money, does she really need to steal yours? That’s just plain rude! Would you want to keep seeing her all the time?
You’ve worked hard to build your business, not to share it with the beautician.
I know it’s not easy starting up, but sometimes things happen and it’s time to move.
You might feel better if you find an alternative space before you have this talk, so you won’t be fretting so much about the outcome.
Do you have all your clients contact details? Make sure you do so you can let them all know you’ve moved.
Call or go visit gyms, hair salons, nail bars, beauticians to see if they’ve got a space to rent. Let them know you’ve got a client base, it’s a bonus. Recession is tough times, businesses would appreciate the extra rent. Put a post on here for space. The guild of therapists website, you can put a post for space, and view spaces to rent. Gumtree is also a good place to look for space.
Try not to enter a discussion about it, if you do the salon owner might try to talk you round or belittle you. Stick to your guns! Just a statement will do “There is not enough business for both of us. I’m not happy about .... spray tanning. What will you be doing about this?” You’ll know from her answer whether it’s time to go or not, nothing to discuss really.
Soz about the long post, jus so hard starting out and you don’t need this. And I know just how it feels, so feel strongly about it.
About 80% of what we worry about never actually happens. So hopefully the owner sees your point of view and sorts this out.
Moving isn’t easy but it’s something that’ll you’ll end up doing one day, got to do what’s right for you and your business.
Good luck hun. Keep me posted x x x

Oh dear, poor you.
This is a tricky situation but there is some great advice given.

How many days a week do you work, & how many days a week does the other girl do?

Do you both charge the same price for spray tan?
Do you offer special offers like book 5 get 1 free?

Could you maybe talk to the client who you saw coming out of her room after her spray tan - see if the other girl approched her?

Who takes each of your bookings?

Do you have posters in reception advertising your spray tan? If not could you make some up, stating "spray tans by ......., call me on ........ to make an appointment" - or something similar.

On an average week how many spray tans do you do?

I cant believe she has the check to do this, I couldnt have the front.

Love Emma x:hug:x

hi emma, we work roughly the same hours, this girl did approach the girls in the salon about the spray tanning as i found out today after speaking to one of the girls, i do have posters in the salon and the receptionist books in clients but i also book clients in too from my mobile, i roughly do about 15 sprays at the moment so as you can see i cant afford to share! i wouldnt have the front either emma but as advised above i maybe should! x

hi to everyone thats given the above advice, i really really appreciate it and im ready to face the situation on tuesday with a better head! im looking forward to getting out and about tomorrow to see whats on offer if the situation doesnt work out! i will let you all know the outcome on tuesday, cheers ev1:)

It is not professional for the owner to have 2 therapists in competition with each other. Like someone else on here said, you could go off and train in other treatments and offer them and then there would be a free for all. The very least I would expect, if I were you, would be for you both to be charging the same amount and not competing with each other on cost. What I would really want is for the other therapist not to offer tanning but I am not sure how realistic this is. :)
