Firstly, I know this has been mentioned before, but thread went off on another tangent.
Text talk/speak in threads just looks ridiculous in a professional forum, I (IMHO) think it should be reserved when using the mobile to send messages ( although I prefer to communicate like an old fashioned human being and actually talk).

And heaven forbid, I'm almost ready to dig up those old spellcheck threads I supported so well in the past.

Sometimes I fell like some threads have been started or responded to by Vicky Pollard .... or ..... I'm gonna use that word (some cheap CHAV).

It's interesting to see a post requiring some kind of assistance in regard to a problem ......... with 6 million (thats a magic figure that only a few will understand) spelling mistakes. You could at least make some attempt to make yourself look respectable by using spellcheck for IE, or firefox .....( Google it, then install it ) apparently we all have internet access.

Cummon guys pick it up and show the readers/writers/repliers that nail techs do deserve some kind of respect.

Shoot me down (I'm ready for it) but please use spellcheck in your replies.

Three cheers for Carl !!!

I too am sick of trying to unravel what some people are trying to say.

I am too old for text talk and old enough to look up a word where I am not sure of the spelling.

No shooting down from me:lol:

I'm with you on this one Zoo! Have even said it myself before, and yes, some geeks didn't like it. I was told a thread like this might make some geeks feel paranoid to post and put them off joining a fantastic forum. It was even suggested my comments may be a bit snobby or petty.

In all honesty, I'm neither of the above IMO :green: . I am a fun loving geek with a great sense of humour. But I agree that 'text speak' to many people, puts one off wanting to even read a thread. It is even more difficult for the geeks whose first language is not English.

This is a professional forum to help other people in the beauty industry. I agree that it shouldn't require to much effort to avoid text speak.

I agree as well. We should be able to read a post without having to 'decode' what is being said. It's about professionalism and respect for the people who will be reading it.

I fully support what you've said.
There has been a recent influx of text-talk and it makes it hard to read some threads/replies.

One of the most important things to remember is that the Salon Geek site is international and we have a great many members whose first language isn't English, for those members the text-talk might as well be written in Martian because it won't make any sense to them at all.

Those members who use text-talk will be missing out on some potentially important information from those of us who can't be bothered to decipher.

Good thread Carl :green:

Its bare grim nd does mi ead in, init.

Seriously though i refuse to text talk.. even when texting.. hence some of my texts take two messages!

BUT

we do all have certain nuances and ways of writing that show who we are! so i really think we should keep them!
You 100% right in the text talk.. but as humans we will always spell stuff wrong!

:green:

i just think if you are seriously asking a question then don't you think people need to be able to read it....how can anyone help if they cant even make sense of the question.

its ageism to just presume that we all understand this way of talking....

It is a respect thing as well I think.

There was a similar post I made a few days ago about the way we talk to people on here - as in an aggressive or non aggressive way - would you write a note to your teacher using this type of gobbledegook?

LOL.

I agree that we do all have certain nuances and styles of writing and talking and I realize we use these in our everyday lives. When I text on my phone, I use 'text speak' because it is obviously convenient. I also turn the air blue sometimes with my language (okay so I'm not proud but I've done it for years).

The point of the thread is not asking us to give up our styles or who we are. I think Carl's point is just asking that we use the forums in a professional way. In my case for example, turning the air blue or typing posts in text speak, is not professional so I try not to do it.

We are all human and we all make errors, but it really helps if everybody at least makes an effort to post correctly.

Good thread Carl :green:

It's not just our non-English speaking members that have a problem. Some of us are knocking on a bit and have not been brought up with text speak. I had to get an 18 year old to decypher a text from my 15 year old sister in law a while back.:green:

I'm glad this has been brought up again. Cheers Carl.

hahahaha, just to prove me wrong you put my post through spellcheck, don't you think I am aware of the deliberate mistakes, I would you prefer me to be anal and put a space in the middle of spell & check to make "spell check" look good? Firefox also comes up as a mistake, but we all know what it is ......

Perhaps I should have said "koom on man" instead of cummon, so you could pick up on my Geordie heritage.

You know what I mean and meant .... but by all means carry on, as already stated "i'm prepared".

Are you seriously knocking on a bit at the ripe age of 36 Sals  lol? Oh golly gosh, I must be seriously ageing at 43:lol: xx

If you could see me today you'd think I was 63!:green:

I'm with you as well on this Carl, txt speak does my head in! It's bad enough on a mobile phone (but forgivable!) but on a forum like this it's just lazy...... Spelling mistakes are no biggy IMO - completely different to txt talk which comes across as rude really......

I think we all make spelling mistakes from time to time but some I have read recently made the post almost unintelligible.

Everyone makes spelling mistakes ..... gaaawd I can never get that "I" before "E" except after "C" (but it doesn't count in all words), that stuff can be quite confusing.

I'm not talking about word perfect posts, I'm talking about real basic stuff that makes us look like we have had some kind of edyookayshun.

Totally agree Carl. It's lazy, unprofessional, looks like you can't be bothered. Not to mention totally fazing some people. Actually if it's all in text talk I can't be bothered to read. Or reply. :green:

Bad spelling is one of my pet hates.... text talk is another, except in the context of a text message...
