Hi everyone,

It's that time again when we launch our two annual Nail Competitions, UK Nail Tech and Scottish Nail Technician of the Year.

UK Nail Tech takes place on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th April at the NEC Birmingham, as part of BeautyUK. Scottish Nail Tech takes place on Sunday 10th May at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh, as part of Scottish Beauty.

More info will be available on the Scottish Nail Tech soon, but firstly here's more on UK Nail Tech.

This is the third year that UK Nail Tech has taken place, and the competition is once again directed by champion nail artist Denise Wright and coordinated by myself and the Guild News / Nail File team. We are very grateful to our sponsors Entity Nail Couture, Odyssey Nail Systems, Safe Salons, and ABT for supporting the event this year.

There are 10 categories for you to enter, and with four competition sessions you can enter up to six different categories.

New for 2009 is the Boxed Nail Art competition, and for the first time, our Photographic category requires hands and feet to be included.

The Top Tech categories are designed for technicians who can competently complete a set of competition nails in two hours 30 minutes, using their chosen system or discipline. These categories allow you to compete against the nail crème de la crème, and even if you’ve never entered a professional competition before, the Newcomers category gives you the chance to test your skills under competition conditions.

The theme for this year’s Photographic category is ‘Fire & Ice’, and for the first time, competitors will be required to include hands and feet within their entry. Judges will be looking for the best ‘cover shot’ which encapsulates this theme – so let your imagination run wild! The winning image will be featured in Guild News and The Nail File.

New to UK Nail Tech, the Boxed Nail Art category allows you to create stunning nail art with the theme ‘Children’s Fairytales’. Judges are looking for ten decorated nails presented in a plain display box.

If you’re not confident with producing ‘competition standard’ nails but want to showcase your salon work alongside your peers, then Salon Nail Challenge is for you. The judges are looking for the perfect set of salon nails using any of the products you would use in the salon, produced in one hour and 30 minutes.

Salon Nail Art Challenge competitors product Permanent Nail Art using coloured acrylics, gels and glitters etc, produced in one hour and 30 minutes. You can use skills of encapsulation, 3D or others but your design must be deemed as commercially wearable. Following feedback from last year’s competitors, you now have 90 minutes to complete just one hand (the other hand must be completed before the competition).

For the Student Nail Art Challenge, the judges will be looking for the student who can produce the best set of nails to NVQ Level 2 standard demonstrating natural tip blending, choosing to work in one colour or pink and white, with one hand then painted in red, in two and a half hours.
