Hi
I read on the BABTEC site that you do not have to be qualified to work on the public. There is no legal requirement for this! I'm qualified in nails but as i know how to tint lash and brows would i be able to do this on the public with my insurance covering it without being qualified????
If anyone knows for sure some info would be great.
Thanks

I would suggest that you telephone your insurance company and ask them. however you are likely to find that peeps on this site will give a somewhat rabid reply to the whole issue of performing any service without a proper qualification. We are all professionals on this site and to us that means having the qualifications to perform services, anything else isn't ethical imo.
For example I know how to colour hair, properly, a hair dresser I went to school with showed me how and I'm perfectly comfortable with colouring my own hair, my own hairdresser has told me what a great job I do but I would never colour someone else's hair, I am a nail tech not a hair dresser.

I totally understand what you are saying. I don't believe in doing a job with nothing when others have took there time training. I am qualified in nails but i've had one or 2 clients ask me if i tint. Thats the only reason why i ask. I'm not into doing the beauty side was just an extra i might have done now and again. It wouldn't be a thing i advertised.
Thanks for the reply

Bottom line hun you need to get trained with the certificate or pass it to someone else even if its just one person, sorry if thats offended you but I did try to be tactful.

Oh i'm not offended. I'm just wanting to know ins and outs. i'm not ignorant to training. And I'm not that young it's change of career. Just wanting opinions on what i can and can't do. I wouldn't train for tint as i'm not interested in that side, But thanks for your view

Your insurance will only cover you for certificates that you have passed.

For example I have insurance for nails, but I don't do gel so if I went and had an accident with a client while doing gel, my insurance would tell me to take a leap, as i'd never qualified with those products.

Remember, insurance companies are always looking for an out on a claim, so you can't make it easy for them.

You are highly unlikely to get insurance without qualifications. Most, if not all, insurance companies will require you to be qualified in a treatment before you practice on the public. Being unqualified and offering treatments will leave both you and your client at risk.

Thats all i need to know. Thanks alot guys. I shall not be peforming extras then! I didnt really want to do it as a course just people asking for it.
Much appreciated x

You say that you are not interested in doing the training, but why not? If you are getting requests for it, and you are already doing it, why not get the qualification and add to your menu?

Just a bit confused by your question/answer.

Yeah i could do i was thinking that but there's other courses i want first that will make me more money. So maybe eventually i might do it.

We all have to start somewhere and the start post is different for everyone. Some peeps start with one day courses and other 5 days. Some do home learn. Whatever one's starting point, I think it is important to continue learning and developing one's skills. More often than not (99%) you get what you pay for IMHO.

You may be able to lash tint, but who taught you or was it self taught? Do you understand the principles behind tinting eg. contraindications, the different peroxide strengths, how the molecules work for the tint to develop etc... or the anatomy and the structure of hair ....?

Your initial query suggests you would charge for a service for which you have not been trained. You most definitely would not be covered by insurance if a client made a claim against you. Why would you even consider doing this in the first place when there are other courses you would rather go on to make more money?

I wasnt considering it, it was people asking and i said no, but was wondering how it works.
15 years ago which is obviously a while ago i trained at a college doing 3 years of hair and beauty so i do know in and outs to an extent. I only did 1 1/2 years of this and back then wasn't my cup of tea. Since then after other careers i decided to get back into it so i can do this in my own time round my 10 year old. And work mobile. This is why i thought i'd ask people what they knew to cover my own back! This now i can explain to my clients which i thought in the first place but wasn't sure!

Not being funny but what would you do if you did do this and say the person had a reaction to the tint and tried to sue you, but you weren't qualified so couldn't get insurance?

I think I wouldn't dare do anything unless I was qualified, it's not worth the risk.

Like i said and am not being rude but i'm not a young girl and in my 30s and have comon sence and know all about reactions etc. And i'm not ignorant to training, I have common sence or i wouldn't be asking. It's just one of those things you sit there and think about then have a few questions so i thought i'd put it out on here. I've just been told by 2 people who do beauty work to do it only if they ask, But i'm not a cowboy and i didn't want to get into trouble. I was wanting to know the full ins and outs from others.
I will not be performing anyway and i havn't done either which will continue to stay that way unless i do the course.

Good choice hun. Better safe than sorry!

I must say that i am very shocked to hear that this was on the Babtac site

I think what they mean is that there is no-one that regulates it in the uk, therefore there are SOME people that do treatments without being qualified. But because they have no qualification for it, their insurance does not cover it and so if they were sued, the insurance company wouldn't pay up.

Yeah but like was said it's shocking that BABTEC site tells you that and front page too. Lil Linz you are correct.
Not a good thing to say on there

Can I just say that the point we make on our site (ie there being no requirement for qualification) is for the public - we suggest that THEY ask to see qualifications of ANY therapist to protect all you good people who are trained!

Good for you for asking the question......I agree with all comments on here, you really do need to gain the qualifications to gain the insurance.....how about evening class? I am nearly finishing my level 3 at college, fitting it around my commitments and did the level 2 the year before that some 20 miles away from me...if you really want something and want to make some money, do it the right way....You sound like a conciencious person by asking the question.....go get the qualifications, your clients will still be there and you will be able to sell more of your services then:)
