:) Hi this is my 1st post, so be kind!

Been looking through everything, and have been really interested in the posts about toners.

It sounds like alot of you always put a toner on after lifting hair colour.

Do you add this after the 1st wash? and how long do you leave it for?

Ive got a client who goes yellow really easily, dont bleach it anymore but normally use Wella 12/0 with 12%. She is 19 and really loves the almost white cool blondes that everyone wants. Would you say a toner would be good on her to get a more ashy tone.

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to salon geek  ,

you dont say what level she is naturally ?
but if she is throwing off brassy tones , it would be better if you changed over to a more ashy tone in your high lift tint as this will tone it for you as well ,

if its just a bit of pale yellow 12/16 is nice for cool tones,

if she is throwing off brassy tones then a 12/1 is good ,

I had a client who had a high lift tint
and it threw off a small amount of yellowy tones
so I mixed half a wella highlift 12/0 and half of the 12/16
plus 1+2 developer
and it was just enough to make it a cool baby blonde, :)

but if you use ash tones be very careful of taking any ash tones through to the ends of any lightened or bleached hair .....
as it can grab and go too dark too ash or even kahki ,
always test piece it first

if you are using ash tones on the roots which is fine for getting rid of brassy roots,
if the mid length and ends still need toning and they have been lightened or have bleach on them
you may be better swapping over to a 10/- line with pastel 1+2 without the ash tones in it as bleached or lightened hair on the mid lengths and ends can be very porous and grab any ash tones very easily
so always do some toner test pieces first :)

back to toners ....
toners may help get rid of brassy tones on your clients hair ,
there are all different sorts out there,
you can use any of the Wella tints with pastel 1+2
in the 9/- and the 10/- for gentle toning of white or bleached hair
follow manufacures instructions for application ,

below are some toners that are put on after washing the bleach off
they are usually applied to damp towel dried hair
eg..
Wella colourfresh in 0/6 silver violet is good for toning out bleached pale yellow tones , as it doesnt grab on bleached hair ( do the ends last )
Proclere make some nice herbal blonde toners too that are specially made for bleached hair toning,
and they dont produce grab either ,
they usually have a shade ring in sallys to choose your shades from
(again apply to the the roots first and the ends last )

hope that made sense

here's another link that may help :)
