Hi fellow geekers,

In the next couple of months I am looking at setting up my own mobile business doing beauty and spray tanning.

I just wondered if it is worth getting VAT registered? How much this costs?

I would be looking at making around 20k a year.

thanks

When you say "making" 20K per year, is that profit or turnover?

You only need to be VAT registered if you have a turnover of around 70K per year or over. If your turnover is lower than this, then VAT registration is optional and voluntary.

So, if you are turning over less than 70K per year, you need to work out if you would be better off being VAT registered or not (off the top of my head, I'd suspect you'd be better off not being VAT registered). If you would be better off by *not* being VAT registered, than I'd definitely recommend not registering for VAT until your business grows to the point where your annual turnover reaches the VAT threshold (and thus registering for VAT becomes mandatory).

It's definitely not worth voluntarily registering yourself for VAT if your dealings are with the public. ;)

Avoid vat registration at all costs !! total pain in the preverbial !! your just a tax collector for the government :twisted:

ok thanks guys for your replys, I knew it would be voluntary but wasn't sure if it would be worth it with regards to training and equipment costs so I could claim back VAT but sounds like its more hassle than its worth.

If in future my business grows I may consider it .

Thanks again :)

does anyone know anywhere that does good quality, good value business cards or leaflets ?

Ive checked out vista print and a couple of others but the postage is extortinate and long!!

I've just had some amazing business card, price list, flyers, the lot done, but unfortunately, it was my friend who has sorted my branding, and the printing, helped take charge of the webbuilders, invaluable.

This is the first time Ive spent real money doing it properly and its so worth it.

My friend designed some birthday invites recently and vistaprint were the cheapest option, and I'm waiting for some t-shirts I've ordered, but unless you pay quite a bit for postage Vistaprint are very slow, also you would have to design your cards etc.

If you want people to take notice my advice to you is spend that bit more, find a graphic designer, and really grab your audiences attention, but that is just my opinion not necessarily the right one, definately not the cheapest, but I've had great feedback:Look_left

Thats great thanks guys!

Ive got a design in mind that ive drawn myself so just need 2 get it printed really, will have a look at your suggestions.
