:cry:hi guys, just wondered if anyone had an opinion on this one.its a long story so here goes....
m had a full set of acrylic nail extensions done by me on the 14th August 08.everything was carried out as normal, professionally and the nails looked beautiful,m was going on holiday the next day for a few weeks and this is the reason she had them done.she said she had had them done many times before at the chinese nail bars in town.anyway, one set later, money taken and a happy client walked out of the door.nothing at all out of the ordinary.
anyway on monday 6th October (8 weeks later)m walks in the door and says, look at my nails, theyre terrible.she explained that the extensions had hurt her nails and she had taken them off 2 days after having them put on with nail varnish remover.the nails were put on 8 weeks ago and when i held her fingers to look at the nails, she was saying oooh, ouch very dramatically.she was then left with nails that didnt look very sightly, the central part of the nail was missing from the free edge nearly up to the cuticle, and looks a little greenish.you could see a ridge from where a nail had been put on (this ridge ended and you could see new nail growing through, but it looked like 2/3 weeks worth of growth) and her nail bed looked red.i racked my brains to think what it could have been, perhaps an allergy to one of the products, is this possible?i asked her to come back the following day to see our Manicurist who is an expert in natural nail problems.

when m had left,i quickly realised that 8 weeks of growth would be a lot more than what i had seen.i know that everyones nails grow at a different rate, but 8 weeks you would expect them to be around halfway down the nail, and i knew that what i had seen was only 2/3 weeks worth.i suspected this lady had had a fresh set of nails done in her holiday destination and they had filed/drilled her nails down so much that she was left with all these problems.i never file down the natural nail down too much, just gently scuff the surface with a light file.i know i could not have caused this damage,i have never had any other complaints whatsoever, especially not damaged natural nails.i was upset that this woman was blaming someone elses work on me.she coudlnt go back to the place on holiday so me and that salon was the next best place.

so on tuesday 7th october m comes in and demands to see my boss,i explained to her that she was here to see the manicurist, and i knew that the boss wasnt going to be here,i never said she was going to be here.i only said myself and the manicurist.she was agressive and she said she had been to the doctors and he had diagnosed her with a fungal infection and prescribed her antibiotics.i asked her if she had had any infills or a new set and she snapped back at me and said no,i havent touched them since you ruined them.we asked again what she had taken them off with, she replied nail varnish remover that you can get in the shops.the manicurist asked, did it contain acetone?m replied no.can you get acrylic off without acetone?and just plain varnish remover?i didnt think so? she then demanded to see my certificate NOW.my boss had kept mine with her at her house,i said this and said ive definately got a certificate and you can see it when i ask my boss to bring it in.she said RIGHT!IM GOING TO THE SOLICITORS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING,EXPECT A LETTER AND I WANT TO SEE YOUR CREDENTIALS! with that she stormed out from the shop leaving me shaking and upset:cry:.i called my boss rightway and she asked me to call m and ask her to come in saturday which i did
the insurance company have been informed of whats happening and my certificates and details are ready.
i dont know what to do,i am clean, hygenic, and i know the correct way to do a set of nails.there is no way on earth i could have caused this damage.she is blaming me for someone elses bad work. she is coming in on saturday to see my and my boss who is also trained in nail extensions.my certificates will be there, and my boss wont let her walk all over us.why should me and my salons reputation hve to suffer beacause of a silly woman blaming bad work on me.my boss wants to take photographic evidence as u can see how much her natural nail had grown.
what do u guys this about his situation:cry::cry::cry:

I din't even read the whole post .... I got to where you said "Chinese", then posted this comment.

You sound racist and I bet they are not Chinese at all.

I.... and others know what you mean..... but you gotta stop calling them Chinese, it just makes you look uneducated, IGNORANT and RACIST.

Now i'll go back and read the rest of your post.......

this is a very sad situation.
im not an expert on things like this but i wouldnt have thought she would have a leg to stand on as she had left it so long before coming back.i may be wrong though.if she had a problem after 2days with the nails that you did why didnt she come back then instead of leaving it for 8 weeks.
if she removed them herself then she has only got herself to blame and god knows where she has got the idea that they can be removed with nail varnish remover that contains no acetone, know wonder her nails are damaged.
it sounds as if your boss is being very supportive which is great as you need to stick together.
i wish you luck.x

Did you fill out a client card including dates, srvice and contra-indications? and give her an after care leaflet?, this will help assertain her (the clients) responsibilities as to when she was supposed to return.

Is it possible to fill in your profile so we know where you are at in your career as a nailtech?

She sounds horrible but you get people like that. Its good that your boss is supporting you. It will prob all blow over. She sounds like cow trying to get some freebies. I don't know anything about nails but if it were me with extensions, I make them sign a contract to say that they have to have them removed professionally by me. So you should be covered as she did a home job and didnt get in touch with you until 8 weeks!

Feeeeeeeeew thats a though one. If something like that would have happened to me i wouldnt have been worried since i know my work and the health of my customers nails always comes first.
Working with top quality products and performing a high quality service you can always feel safe and confident in what you do.
So if you know that you havent caused the damage be firm aswell. its easy for a customer to blame everything on the nailtechnician. its like the typical story...i got my nails done and afterwards they were horrible, the nailtechnician destroyed my nails. then when i ask them how they got them removed they admit they just ripped them off....

Did you fill out a client record card at her appointment with you and record what you had done and whether she was satisfied with the service at the time? If not you should have done BECAUSE IT IS YOUR EVIDENCE. ALWAYS FILL OUT A CLIENT RECORD CARD. This is getting more and more important these days.

I also agree totally with Carl. it is not good enough to label a bad salon (If she went to one) a Chinese salon. It is insulting to do that. You do not know what kind of a salon it was or if she even went to one.

What you do is hand the whole thing over to your insurance company to deal with. I wouldn't have any further communication with the woman. It is up to her to prove that it was you who caused the damage to her nails.

If I were you I would be asking my other happy clients for written statements as to how satisfied they are with your work for you to hand to your insurers.

hi,im sorry you were offended by my comment.i obviously didnt think and completely agree with you that this sounds ignorant.i have been to many quick nail bars.i am sorry for any offence caused
x

You are a big person and you already have my respect for saying that.

I'm absolutely sure you meant no offence and we have all been guilty in the past of saying these things in ignorance ... thing is we have some wonderful members here who are great technicians and they are Chinese and I wouldn't offend any of them for the world and I'm sure you wouldn't.

Just hoping when others read this they will be educated by it too and then maybe we can all stop referring to these discount salons like this and just call them what they are which is discount salons (they are not all NSS either so this term should also be avoided if you don't know for sure).

Let us know how your meeting turns out. I feel genuinely sorry for your distress over this situation and hope it all turns out OK for you. It will ... she must prove her claims and really she can't and her solicitor will tell her that and that will be the end of it after scaring you half to death in the meantime. Get those letter from your clients who will be more than happy to write on your behalf and sing your praises I'm sure.

ive heard of a salon "chinese nails" where i live and so she wasnt being rude/ignorant or racist how stupid!!

ive heard of a salon "chinese nails" where i live and so she wasnt being rude/ignorant or racist how stupid!!

Oh dear , lets not get into it shall we? That is a totally different thing and she wasn't referring to that salon.

If a salon CHOOSES to call themselves that, then they probably are Chinese and that is just FINE.
But to brand all crappy salons as Chinese Salons is wrong full stop. Shall we stay on topic now please.

By the way I don't much like being labelled as stupid either and I'm sure neither does Carl.

no i did mean it in a silly way.i now understand after hearing from these professionals and having a good think myself how this causes upset and offence.i definately wouldnt want to cause any offence,i dont want to sound ignorant myself and i have seen brilliant work from chinese technicians so it was a silly flippant choice of wording so i apogogise.i now know that correct term, and i will not use that term any more.again sorry for any distress caused.
thank you all for your feedback,i will get in touch with my other clients tomorrow and ask them for a statement.
fingers crossed x

Feel so sorry for you hun,

Let us know how things turn out. And as Geeg says "FILL OUT THOSE RECORD CARDS - IT'S A MUST!!!!!

Good Luck and my thoughts are with you:hug:

hi geeks
well the customer didnt show up today.hopefully realising that we wasnt going to give her a quick refund.i hope this is the end of it.well i hope so anyway because i actually leave the salon next saturday to start a year long gap year travelling around the world.:)
thanks for your replies,i cant believe how much ive learnt from one thread and at the same time making me a better salon professional.i will definately be using this great website more often to learn new tips and tricks and advice.
thanks again :)

Phew, what a relief, enjoy your trip and come back and see us again:hug:

I am sure your confidence has been bounced from here to Timbucktoo. However, I have highlighted in red your above comment about nail growth because it is incorrect. Although individual nail growth varies, depending on age, health, diet etc.... it does take on average about 5 to 6 months for the nail matrix to grow to the free edge.

Therefore, in 8 weeks, the nail growth would not be as you described above. I'm not just spouting this information from my training note, but from experience as well. I have had a couple of deep rooted nail infections before and the damage takes months to grow out.

I only mention this because I hope you can benefit from this information as it will help you to when assessing your client's nails.

Sounds really traumatic for you hun, I hope its turns out well and from what the experts have commented on, if she has to prove that you did cause the damage she cant because you didnt.

Keeps us up to speed x

what do u guys this about his situation:cry::cry::cry:

Well in all fairness I think she's been watching the adverts that say "have you had an accident lately that's not your fault"
Tryers... I like to call them. But if you do as you have been trained you have no need to worry at all.
Your certificates should be displayed at all times as well as your insurance cert mate x
After 8 weeks I personally wouldn't have given her the time of day tbh. As your records would prove.
I DO wonder sometimes why the chinese LOVE to be called chippies or restaurants but hide when nails are mentioned?
No offense to anyone Chinese etc.
Weird though eh?

I DO wonder sometimes why the chinese LOVE to be called chippies or restaurants but hide when nails are mentioned?

Sorry to the original poster but I'm gonna have to hyjack this thread to answer this question.

Hey Judy, the truth is that the Chinese don't actually like to be labelled as a chippie or a resturant either. The reason why there are many chippies and resturant owned by the Chinese is because when the Chinese first came to England in the 60s and 70s, there was not very much else they can do to make a living.

The older generation is not as educated and have a serious language barrier so all they can offer is to open up a shop and cook and serve what they are good at. As a matter of fact, many people didnt even start of as good cooks, some of these people may even be in professional jobs back home but have to put down their dignity to work hard and start all over again in a kitchen.

Which is the reason why that the Chinese puts a lot of pressure on their children to work hard at school. The favourite telling off saying from an older Chinese parent is "study hard or you will end up in a kitchen like us".

So in reality, although you don't hear or see them moaning, most of these Chinese don't enjoy working in these take-away or resturants. It is almost something the Chinese 'look down' on within their own community because they all know working in a resturant is only something you do if you are not good enough to do something else.

As for hiding when nails are mentioned. There really is no need for the Chinese to hide, because the truth is, many of these discount stores are not owned by the Chinese. The Chinese are actually not that big on doing nails ( yet..!). The older generations are still running their resturants and take-aways and the younger generation, after studying hard and graduating from universities, are now doing other professional jobs - banking, IT, doctors, lawyers etc etc..

The people everyone sees in these discounts stores are probably from a different part of the world although some do speak Chinese - In the same way how a French person can also speak English. I think this seems to be the biggest misunderstanding.

I know of a Chinese nail tech who has had proper training, who can speak perfect English, who has a passion for this industry and who certainly does not damage anyone's nails.
She is not in the hiding - she just likes to quietly get on with what she does. :wink2:

That is a brilliant explanation thankyou hun:hug:
It's good to be able to see the other side of things.
We actually have no idea of things like this so it's great to be able to hear things from you on such matters.
BTW I know that tech...she's brill:hug:
