Hi Guys!

I dont use this very often but looking for some advice!! if any one can let me know their thoughts that would be great!

I have been to see a salon owner who is extending her hair salon into a beauty room and nail bar in the near future. She wants me to work as a nail tech. She has not committed her self yet to a wage, We have broached the subject and she said she likes to pay her staff well! £6.00 + but wants to work out figures etc before she gives a set figure.

After talking with her it seems she will need help with health & safety, MSDS sheets etc. She does not know any thing about nails and has been asking my advice on things. She has said she will need to have my creative certificate so she can order creative products.

This has made me think that a higher wage could be negotiated. What sort of wage does a nail tech expect to earn?

Be great to have your thoughts on this one!!

Thanks Guys:lol:

it depends how good you are, what is your experience.

I trained with star nails in 2001, Started to build up as a mobile nail tech after lots of practice. I have worked in a couple of nail salons which i have really enjoyed and gained a lot of experience. The salon owner put me on a creative converstion course which i have never looked back! i have now been on a number of creative courses. (i wish i did this to begin with) I worked in a nail salon over two years ago and was getting £6 pound an hour. Now in the mean time i have a few of my own clients and i have just finished a course at collage using creative liquid & powder so i could have the paper work of city & guilds! Which was well worth doing! So i have had a fair bit of experience, i have been doing nails nearly 7 years. Has been a bit of a struggle because i live in a quiet area and it took a couple of years for nail extenstions to filter down here!! but it is starting to happen, and i want to be the one doing them!

Any advise im greatful for!

Thank you!

o.k thats great.

i would assume then that you are now doing great sets of nails in less than 1 +1/2 hours that return for rebalances with very minimal lifting and problems.

if that is the case i would certainly be expecting more than £6 per hour. i would think more like £7.50 at least but i havent worked in a solon for an hourly rate for a long time.

i think a lot of it would depend on the salons price for services.
say a full set is £40 and you are paid 1+1/2 hours at £6, then you would take £9 and the salon £31. obviously they do incurr other costs and you would have deductions too, but this would give you a starting point for working things out.

for someone with your experience and training, you might want to consider self employment.

If I were you I would look at other options. If this lady knows nothing about the nail trade, you will pretty much be running the place by the sounds of it. You could rent a room and do this for yourself, and keep the profits for yourself, £6 per hour sounds too low from what you have described.

Perhaps ask her if you can rent the room, or contact other salons to see if they have room or availability for you to rent a room and work for yourself

i think £6 per hour low for a nail technician got ur experience definitely...I've got a placement as a trainee with a lady she is doing mobile technician she gives me £6 per hour just helping her with preparations and manicure...!!

if your hav invested in your education at your cost , i personally would offer a 60/40 split or some thing similair. £ 6 seems realy low. How much r they charging for nails? How much have u invested to date?

If I were you I wouldn't hesitate in going it alone, mobile or working from home.

The only thing you need a salon/shop front for is for getting your clients in the first place. If you work for yourself you will need to spend a bit initially on marketing, ads, leaflets etc, but once you have your client base this will decrease drastically.

I started 4.5 years ago and now it's mainly word of mouth recommendations which get me new clients an I'm working almost to capacity. There's no way on this earth I would go into a salon and work for someone else, not even for £10 an hour.

But yes, going back to your original question (sorry I sidetracked lol) I would have though you had enough leverage there to be able to negotiate a considerably higher wage. Good luck x

Thanks guys for your feed back! thats a real help!

Will be meeting up with the owner a gain in a couple of weeks so we will see what happens. But might also give it some thought about taking the plunge and going alone!

Hi

Speaking from a salon owners point of view: you say you are experienced but experience dosnt always mean your any good! I have had so many staff start and had to finish them as their skills are just not up to scratch.

What i do is start off new staff on a starter rate then i see

A) how they build up their clients (eg how may return and how many friends they send)
B) how quickly and skillfully you work.
C) how much you earn me per hour

I usually give new staff a 6 week trial then asess them in a review if i feel and they feel they have done well then i up their rate. I also pay commision too.

If your good you will build up really quickly so suggest a starter wage plus commission with a six week review.

HTH

i think £6.00 an hour is reasonable to start off with, considering there is no client base yet, you also have to consider your employers costs too... its not cheap running a salon, she has to pay all the overheads for the premises, rates, stock, paye for employees, insurance, banking fees, marketing & advertising, not to mention all the little things like the expense of card processing facilitys, prs liscencing etc, etc. at first you may only be busy for a couple of hours in the day, and she will still be paying you when your not doing anything. i suggest you negotiate a commision rate on top of your basic, if you only get 10% it still works out at £9ph approx on a set with your base rate. or like the others say, see if she will rent you the room. unfortunately, you have to choose either the comfort of knowing you have a gauranteed wage or take a risk, work hard, and who knows, it may be you offering someone else £6.00 an hour to work for you in the future. good luck. x

Thank you for all your thoughts! lots to think about! cheers
