Hi, I’m currently trying to weigh up different options for going self-employed in the future and need some advise!

I’m currently experienced in waxing (facial, body, intimate etc) however don’t have any official qualifications (I was trained through the company I work for). I think to get insurance for waxing self employed I would need only a diploma so would be pretty straight forward to get.

My other interest is in laser hair removal/tattoo removal but to do this I would need to complete beauty therapy level 2, 3 and then 4 in laser/IPL. But then this would obviously also qualify me to wax too.

So my main question is - what would the difference in income be between a self employed face/body waxer, and a laser technician? Would the difference be big enough for me to warrant completing/paying for 3 NVQ courses?

Thanks in advance!

Factor costs of purchasing or hire of the ipl / laser and understand that you would have to slog at the laser system to get your money back or indeed break even. Is that all you want to do for say 40 hours a week ? I would be bored and would hate wearing eye protection all day long!
Get your basic qualification under your belt and then see if the other option is actually what you want.

I felt the same as you many years ago and thought....Should I go down the laser route and have to give up general beauty therapy? For me it was a no. I would miss losing my lovely regulars clients that I have kept for over 25 years for a more transient group of clients that I would service probably no more than on 6 to 10 treatments and then see once or twice a year for a top up. No thanks to that! I went for a regular income and a wonderful relationship with some very nice ladies .....priceless to me. I am a very contented "OLD" Beauty Therapist...time served . Just love it!.

Personally if you could get the level 2 or 3 it would be a really good move.
Please bear in mind that also the level 2 or 3 will give you not only wax as your specialism, but all aspects of our world. Facials/ tinting/tanning/nails/manicures/pedicures Facial electrics. Body treatments.

Then later on you could introduce a whole host of holistic therapies too. Aromatherapy, reflexology, indian head massage, ear candles, reiki,
just to name a few other add ons.
Go for it , you will have a fulfilled career and be your own boss and that's a no brainer.
Good wishes to you

Check with your local council too as some need a special license for Laser, so you can factor in additional costs for when you are ready to start working self employed.

Hi,

I've been successfully doing laser for about 6 months now and finding it to be very good for my business. It's quickly become the central aspect of my business and I'm chuffed!

I find it much easier than waxing and you can charge more, only downside is its a large investment. In my area, you don't need a level 3 or 4 qualifications to do hair removal as long as I had some sort of training. Luckily the manufacturer of my machine gives a free training course when you buy the machine, it was included in the finance that I have. I'm not very techy myself but I got to grips using the machine really fast. You should check your local laws to see if you can do that too. In case you're interested this is the machine that I have https://www.hptgroup.eu/infinity-diode.html
