I'm in a bit of a quandary if an one can help please? I gave a lady with type 2 diabetes a mani and ped, she then booked in for a full leg, bikini and chin wax. She's had waxing done before (another salon) and says she ways fine, so I booked her in (just thought I'd be extra extra careful). I then had another look on threads on here and had a wobbly moment, phoned her back and said I would contact her G.P for a note (which she was fine with) first. Well she's coming tomorrow (could put it off for another day)and I haven't got G.P letter back yet. I don't know whether to phone her and re book her or to just do the waxing and not wait? I've had a look on the diabetes UK website and feel I'm being over cautious with the G.P note and I know that alot of well respected people on here are happy to wax if there's no loss of sensation. I think I'm just worried about the chin and bikini area, as the terminal hair growth sometimes bleeds. Any help please?

Hi I think it depends on a) whether she currently has her diabetes under good control b) the level of its severity and if has suffered any complications with it for any reason c) her current state of health including her skin. (People can be controlled by diet, tablets or injections.) I wax my Mum who has had diabetes for years without problem. However her skin on her legs sometimes can be poor and I avoid those areas. If you feel really unsure just postpone the booking until you get the GP approval. HTH:)

I was taught that diabetes was a contraindication regarding waxing because they tend to have thinner skin. If they are injured, (not by me I might add) the healing time is slower than normal.

I would not wax her personally, but that's my decision.
But if you are prepared to, then not until you are in receipt of the letter signed by her GP. I don't think your insurance would cover you if you have no letter.
Having said that, I usually say no to diabetics as I cannot do with any hassle it may bring!
Is it not the clients responsibility to get the letter from the GP?

I'd rather be over cautious in these days of sue sue sue!

Thanks for your replies. The client phoned a few minutes ago to say that her G.P phoned with the doctors note, so I'm happy to do it now.:)

I know Andy (Axiom) has been in contact with the British Diabetic Association about this and they have told him that as long as the diabetes is well controlled and that there is no loss of sensation in the area being waxed, it's fine to go ahead with treatment. If you want more details you could pm him, I know he'll be really happy to help out with more info if you want it.

Having said that, you should also check with your insurers as to whether they would require you to get GP approval first, and you should also work within your comfort zone, so if you don't feel happy about going ahead with a treatment for any reason, then don't do it.

Hth's.

I'd also take thorough notes for your consultation form, and keep the written GP note with it. x

YES YES YES to doc note and I'd get them to sign a short statement written by them that they take full responsibility.

Also, apply a fine layer of oil under the skin and apply your wax in thin strips and keep your eye on it. Don't worry, you'll be fine. xxxx
