Hi im not sure if anyone has put this on yet but i have just got this email in about

A website highlighting the dangers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to consumers that is set to launch at the beginning of March.
The website, www.safesalons.co.uk, will provide consumers with detailed guides on how to spot a non-standard nail salon and how to know if MMA is being used during a nail enhancement treatment.

Professional Beauty and Professional Spa - Latest news

Look a great idea i for one will be trying to get my salon on this list
:lol::lol::lol:

Absolutely fantastic idea,
i will be the first to flap around and say OMG I'm not trained to NVQ 3 or any other NVQ for that matter,
i am how ever trained by Creative so does that mean i meet the criteria ???

yes i do all the things i should and keep everything in the salon clean
and SAY NO to mma

I did see this on the pro beauty newsletter

Sounds like a good idea to me

I've seen this too.

It is a potentially great idea. I've asked Habia for info as they say they are Habia endorsed.

My questions about it:
-how are they going to advertise to the consumer (this is one of the most relevant aspects and costs the most money)
-who are the 'representatives' that are going to inspect salons
-how are they qualified to 'inspect'
-is every geographical area covered
-how is it going to be 'policed'
-what are the standards required to join
-NVQ Level 3 is mentioned and 'company endorsed' qualification. Who decides on suitable 'company endorsed'
-is it just focussing on MMA issues

An idea is just the beginning. Making it truly effective is something else.

This industry hasn't managed to create an effective consumer targeted standard for salons yet. Even Habia didn't manage it. But there's always a first.

well put marian x

This very subject was also highlighted in this month's Professional Beauty in the letters section....

There is an online petition for people to sign which was set up by Rachel Myatt from The Association of Nail Technicians....I'm not sure whether this petition has been covered before as I can't see any dates on it, but here's the link if you want to sign it.

Petition To Ban The Use Of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) In The UK - Signatures

As Victoria will be meeting with the MP who has an interest in the subject matter it would be good to get as many signatures on there as we can as soon as poss, whether we agree with the the strategies of safesalon or not....

It will show how strongly we feel about the subject.

What a fantastic idea. I will also aim to get my salon on there.

Lou, I would think that that Creative qualified would come under the company qualified bit, I would imagine civil unrest would occur if Creative Certificates didnt count!!

My question is this - will one inspection entitle you to be registered, never to be inspected again, or will there be subsequent, and possible unannounced inspections, as I think this is the only way it would work. Otherwise, NSS's could clean up their act for the inspection, get the plaque, get on the list, then wheel the MMA back out, drop the hygiene practices, and the authorised list would count for diddly squat.

I think its a great idea ,and i will too be aiming to go on the list.

I also signed the petition to ban mma, i didnt realise there was one !!thanks Cathie.

I was inspected by my local council a few years ago, they left me with action points which I duly completed.....when the subject came back up last year at the H&S annual conference and it was all in the media again, they did come back to reinspect to make sure I had carried out my action points...I wasn't at the same salon by then, so it was a different tech with different standards....don't know what happened but I don't think she had the samelevel of inspection I had originally.

I can't see how there can be one body to police the Industry, it's too broad....I do see the 'police' as being the local councils, the same as it is for establishments who poison people with dodgy food.

But, the biggest onus is on us nail technicians who see the damage, month after month, to get our clients who have been damaged by these salons to complain to H&S and Trading Standards, take photographs to back it up and keep plugging away.

We have looked before at writing letters to newspapers and magazines, with no effect....other than sensationalisation.

I believe that if we really want anything to change, it will have to come from the grass roots level....and that's you and I, the technician on the street, mopping up after damage caused and rebuilding consumer confidence in our industry.

not yet!!!

also forgive my ignorance, but if mma is banned in certain states in usa do you find that there are now no nns salons????

No we still have a far share here in NY But they are starting to crack down harded on the NSS Salons the fines are @ $1000 if you get caught. We how ever do have consumers that have no idea of its effects still to this day And when you try to explain it they shrug it off. Really if they are wearing a face mask while doing ypour nails that should acount for something don't you think? And what they do to peoples nail beds with those drills. That should be against the law as well. But the public see them as quick fixes and faster even though they really in the long run are not.

Down In the city there is NNS on every corner it really is a shame. The public just ignore the signs that something could be wrong the facts are that it can cause more damage then even the state department wants to admit.

Can i add to it even though i'm in the states? I have a whole chapter in my books from school on the effects of MMA Do you not learn about it in school? There are studies reports classes on the effects.

Agreed! Not only that... we have to pay for it??? I think that's pants! BTW... do you know we hit the 18,000 mark the other day on this site! Too Cool!

So who would "police" it as such?
Great idea...in theory.

Here in the states its the Department of Health But for places like where i live there is no health department in this county so we share with 2 other counties. In return we have several NNS. Due to the lack of police

I think I made a point about that in my other post on this thread which must have been missed as ever lol.

I believe it is down to the grass roots technicians in conjunction with the local councils, H&S and Trading Standards and our clients who have been harmed by these salons.....if we all can 'report' every instance and get on their backs, maybe we can plug away from the bottom.
