hiya am looking to make my own website but dont really know how to do it. my boyfriend is good with computers so he is gona do it for as. could anyone give as any ideas of how to start xx

Right, now where to start?

There are several places where you can design a site using pre-designed templates, e.g. Freewebs. Several of the geeks on here have sites hosted on Freewebs. Advantage of that is that (with Freewebs at any rate) it's free. Also a good place to start if you are not a huge techie, and acronyms like HTML, CSS and FTP completely bemuse you. Disadvantage is that the templates can limit you in terms of design and layout, and you risk your site looking similar to all the other sites using that template. Also be aware that some of the template generators can turn out "dodgy" HTML too.

If you want to build the site from scratch yourself and not use templates, you have a number of options. You could use software like Dreamweaver or Frontpage to help create the site - this is a more "visual" way of designing sites and avoids most of the complexities of HTML code. Or you could do it the hard core geek way and just code it in HTML.

You then need to think about hosting. With Freewebs and the rest of the template-driven sites, hosting usually comes included as part of the deal. But if you are designing your own site from scratch, you will need somewhere to host it. Companies like 1and1 and 123-reg offer fairly cheap hosting packages that are well suited to beginner sites.

Then there is the other option of getting someone else to design a site for you. Seanny is a geek you could speak to about this, as he has already designed several fab sites for geeks on here. I also design sites myself too - have a look at Judy Archibald - Nail Artist and Nail Creation Team UK Educator and Hair and Nails by Dee for examples (the hairdeesign.co.uk site is not finished yet)...
