I am doing a waxing course in a couple of weeks and have been reading up. It states that the strips used should not be discarded with household waste. If you work from home or are mobile how do you dispose of them? and, am I right in thinking that a special collection comes to you if you are a salon?

yes, its called the wax wagon, they melt da wax back down again and make Hairy Candles, you can use them as good retail opportunity!

soz, couldn't resist, i dont know what the laws in England are but around here the Council don't have particular stipulations on how they disposed of so I just do them with the business waste

Wax strips can contain blood spots and bodily fluids and are classed as clinical waste so need to disposed of accordingly.

Yes thats exactly as I thought, but how are they disposed of?

LOL, I wll be looking out for your sideline business of candle making.......and keep well away lol.

Different councils vary, some stipulate that contaminated waste goes in a yellow bag and is collected by a licensed company such as rentokil, some dont stipulate any such thing. It's important to look at your local council in your area to see what their requirements are.HTH

BABSann is correct xx

i may be way off.... but while training some one said! if mobile ask the client to dispose,,,,,, or u will have to use a yellow bin and pay..... i know loads people that strip thenselves and use bin ... house owners that is with shop bought... interesting tho xx

I emailed my council asking them how I would dispose of used waxing strips and I got this reply. But it doesn't help. Where do I go from here?

Dear Lorraine

Thank you for your email concerning the disposal of waxing strips. These do have to be disposed of as clinical waste but unfortunately the Council is unable to collect commerical waste from businesses.

Sorry to be unable to help.

:Look_righwww.clinicalwaste.com try visiting this website i thinks it's an independent company that deals with clinical waste but from what i can understand all the local councils deal with this matter so if your council does not collect the boxes who does?
your council must have information.:Look_left

Think its just another way for someone to be making money. What about sanitary towels, nappies even dog poo it all seems to end up in household waste.I would say it depends on how much waste you are actually creating as to whether your council would be interested as a homeworker

I never even thought of that. When a mobile therapist used to come to me to wax me she left me with the strips. Its just that knowing my luck I will be checked up on and you can be closed down for not following the rules.

Thank you all for your help. I think I shall just have to contact rentokil when the I do actually start waxing, would they actually come and collect just a few waxing strips per week? Hmmmmm

Just take your rubbish to the tip, easy:D

My old tutor does electrolysis and has an agreement with a local doctors surgery to dispose of her sharps. Maybe you could speak with a local GP's surgery to see if you could pay a small fee to get your strips disposed of with their surgical waste. hth

You have to have a license to carry business waste and not all tips are licensed to accept business waste. You need to check with your local waste managment unit.

You are only a business when you are registered as a business premises, not just a sole trader so you will not have the same obligations. If you just work from a room from your home that is of multi purpose use and not just business or you are mobile your council will probably not expect you to dispose of your waste the same as a salon may have to.
