i used to wrk mobile which was more part time so just done whatever hours were needed until 2 months ago when i started renting in a salon and also still doing a little mobile. i worked any hours to begin with to please everyone but it was getting too much as i have a 2 year old aswell and was working every night . so i set myself hours and was going to do mon and thurs 10-8 and tues fri 12-5 and then sats if required and wed would be my full day off. my mobile work i was just going to class as overtime.

the problem im now having is on a thurs and fri after 4.30 i have to keep the treatment room free so can only do nails after that time so that only leaves me mon eve for eyelash extensions waxing etc that i need the room for. so i was thinking maybe to change my longer days t mon and tues 10-8 then thurs fri 12-5 and then the sat if needed but already im having problems getting people in as everyone seems to work and needs an evening. but i feel as though i was barely seeing my boyfriend and daughter working so many eveings before so i need to set some kind of hours to please everyone that gives me a day off through the week

Ive written a bit of a story oops but what i wondered was what days and hours do you work and how do you deal with loads of people wanting eveings?

I work....

Mon - 9-6
Tues 9-6
Wed 9-6
Thurs 10-7
Fri 9-6
Sat 8.30-5

Although, I work late any night I'm needed to (can't do a Wednesday though) This week I'm starting at 9 on Thurs and finishing at 8, and finishing at 8 on Friday too.

As of next week I'm going to not be doing hair on Tuesday, I'll spend time doing banking and books, and any work on marketing, ordering etc that needs done. Long term, I think we shall open the salon later officially on other nights, and later then 7pm.

I think we'll end up doing Thurs and Friday late til 8ish. I just really book any clients in with myself whenever they want in, and with my BT she is fairly flexible so sometimes I ask her if she could start later and finish later if its needed.

thanks for your reply do you do beauty also?

if it wasnt for my wee girl id work all the time if needed but i need to set some hours and be strict as it so tempting when someone calls to just give them the app and end up working late every night . i know thurs is always a popular late night and if i could use the room for beauty that night id happily work till really late to get everyone in but i can only do nails so think ill have to do mon and tues and then could always do a thurs night mobile until 7 or something then ive still got the rest of the evening off

I rent a beauty room in a sunbed shop & work;
Mon - Fri - 11-8
Wednesdays off
Saturday - 11-6
Sunday off

However sometimes I go in earlier &/or leave later depending on if I am fully booked & what clients want (but I have to ok this first with who I rent my room from, cant do it every day) tomorrow I am doing 10-8. I do try & keep to the opening hours as it gets a very long day. x

Yeah we do beauty too.

The BT works Tues 9-6 Fri 9-6 and Sat 8.30-5.

I am only booking appointments between 8am and 5pm Mon-Sat as I am a single mom so HAVE to be at home in the evenings for my son. If clients can't fit in with me then I'm afraid they'll have to book elsewhere. Surely not many people work 6 days a week, so they can book with me on their day off.

I will do the odd evening for a party that was big enough to justify it then I would get a family member to babysit.

I work when my customers are available. I have some appointments at 8am, and some that I start at 8pm finishing around half 9. Sundays are by appointment.

It's not every day and they defo appreciate the flexibility. If I see a late week coming on - it's easy to manage the diary accordingly to make the free time as I need it.

i think ill do some set hours and make mon and tues my late ones. im worried clients may find it strange though as normally a late night is a thurs but if i do the thurs that only leaves one late night for lashes because i cant get the room on a thurs . oh its a difficult one i cant make my mind up lol

Alison, life wont seem quite so tedious once your wee ones at school (which will fly in, believe me) In our salon we work late nights Tuesday and Thursday. When clients are booking in we always check to see if they can come during the day first, just so we can free up appointments for people who can only do evenings.
Most of our clients are booked in months in advance so they are guaranteed the times that are suited to them so you could try suggesting this to the ones who really need late nights.
Try and set your hours and stick to them though, remember, there is only so much you can do:hug:

what time do you wok till on the late nights ?
id be happy to work really late if it gave me the rest of the nights off. my wee girl used to stay up really late so if i was working late id still see her as shed still be up when i got in but last few weeks shes falling asleep early now so need to be there more evenings at least till shes a bit older. up until last week i was doing evenings most nights and hardly getting to see her so ive decided now im doing two at the most. i just seem to have loads of clients that need nights ad i hate turning people away especially when there is spaces needing filled earlier in the day .

I work:
Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri 9-7:30 then have Sat/Sun/Mon off.
Suits me perfectly cos my hubby's in the Navy & only home at weekends but I can imagine if you've got wee ones those hours would suck:sad:

We're always busiest in the evenings & these appointments fill ups about 4 weeks in advance but I know the folk who have kids have worked out a compromise with the boss xxx

I work till about 9 on my late nights (later if i have to) but i dont feel guilty because it is only 2 nights a week. But again, my children are a bit older, I remember feeling the exact same as you when they were younger. If a client really wants it to be you who does their treatments they will find a way to come to the appointments you have left.( and they will book in advance for the next time)

Hi I rent a room in a hairdressers and my hours are mon-fri 930-430 and saturday 9-3 however I do sometimes go in at 8 on a saturday if someone needs it.
I have two children, my daughter is 4 and my son is 3 so I know exactly how you feel and had to stop mobile and evenings, though have seen an increase in clients rather than decrease due to not working evenings anymore.
Good luck in what you decide ;)

I am very flexible towards my clients individual needs. I don't really have set late nights because I have lots of clients that work. I do late ones as and when my clients need me.
It's easy for me though. My daughter is at uni and hubs is all grown up!!! lol,, well kind of!
I think in this field of work, we have to be able to work flexi. Not all our clients can get to us 9-5 hours.
It will change for you as your child gets older, then you'll wish you could be at home!!
Mind you..longer hours = successful business.
Good Luck xxx
