hey ppl just wondering if u can help me i understand the term NSS, but im not sure exactly what that means to the salon? there is a salon in which i believe is a NSS, they do nail using the drills, white tips, and a large flat brust which resembles a mae up concealer brush, that nails are very neat but there is no appex its just flat ( something iv heard clients actually prefer:eek:) but doesnt that mean the acrylic is not as strong?

anyways what im askin is what is classed as an NSS? is it the method in which nails are dont or just the product that is used? sounds like a daft question...but im confused ???

I think it's an abbreviation for "Non-Standard Salon".

And from what I have heard, typical practices of NSS salons include using MMA monomer, and inappropriate use of electric files etc...

I see a NSS as a non-standard salon also - for me though, it is not just the products but the hygeine or lack thereof, the prep or lack thereof and so on.

We have a couple by us - a place trained with and using a leading brand product but don't do cuticle work during prep, don't sanitise the hands before enhancements, don't sanitise files between clients and such like. Then the other who use an e-file on clients natural nails, use a spare tip to ping off enhancements which need replacing and other horrendous things :(

ah i think im gettin the idead a bit more now, its so frustrating seeing salons like this bcos the clients dont kno any better their so drawn in with the cheap prices and quick time, they dont realise the damage thats done!

its starnge tho bcos the salon that i want into was an actual beauty salon that does training as well, strange that they would or could do nails a non standard way!

thanks for ur help x x

  • they might use an electric file to 'etch' the nail plate
  • they probably don't sanitize their tools in between clients
  • they probably don't sanitize their hands or their clients hands
  • they probably don't change towels in between clients
  • they probably don't use the correct tools for the job
  • they probably don't prep properly
  • they might use MMA (Methyl MethAcrylate) as their monomer

MMA.... have u ever used that b4? i had to do a trade test an didnt get a good look at the monomer, but the salong has a very off smell, and when the l and p and mixed it turns into a more runny consistency, makes it very easy to glide around the nail, but if it is im guessing its a harmful chemical...

I've never used MMA monomer before and don't plan on ever doing so :wink2:

Have a read of this article, it will help with your understanding of MMA, what it is and what's needed in 'prep' for it to adhere to the nail.

If you're using a wet mix ratio then you will get a runny consistency when you make a bead of product, less liquid will give you a drier bead, and so on, it could be that whoever was doing the application was using a wet ratio.

IMO just because someone uses an e-file or tips doesn't make them a NSS. A NSS is a herd em like cattle and herd em out type set up. Lack of cleanliness, sanitizing, disinfection or any regards for the client's safety. Using cheap products and advertising them as high quality. Using marketing techniques and gimmicky names to defraud the public. Charging extra for something that they aren't actually doing or using. Basically anything to make a quick buck. Nowdays some are even trying to pass themselves off as spas, but the attitude and marketing is still the same.
