Hey geeks,
What music do you all play in your salon?
Im geeting sick of plinky plonky music with the odd whale noise in the background lol

I also have Joss Stone as well
Does anyone have any favourite cds or ones clients love?

non cos you have to pay for a licence...:)

Do you need a license to play the radio too?

we've got a lisence for the building so we're sorted

Surely you are allowed to play your own CD's? Is the license not just for playing the radio - where your playing music to a third party and have not paid for it?

Some of these laws are just madness - if I tried to sing the songs to my clients I would a. make them go deaf and b. they would certainly never like any of the songs again and would be therefore put off those artists forever!

You need a PPl licence and a PRS licence to play any music.
You can buy special cd's that cost extra, but you wont need a licence with them as the money goes to pay towards royalties.
I have cd's and the radio on depending on which room and what i'm doing.
I hate that pipe music, water music, whale music......eugh..it doesn't calm me-it makes me more stressed! Give me a bit of meatloaf :)

You need a licence to play both cd's and radio if it's used in a work place so even if your working from home and your doing treatment's you need one and your to pay yearly.......I play the radio for treatment's like waxing and for more relaxing treatments eg massage I have a relaxing cd not the whale stuff I think it's a meditation cd I got at Ellison's lol. It does do your head in if you have to listen to it all day lol.

LOL, you probably hate that CD that I burned for Jayne then ;)

I must admit though, I rather am a fan of swooshey, chilled out New Agey stuff - although it does gain a new dimension played on decent speakers too... but I like Meat Loaf as well ;)

we stock global journey cd's, so have these playing throughout our centre, but they do have a variety of styles some are fab and others are pants. I love pretty much all types of music and i know of therapists that do have a variety form opera to heavy rock, meditation to pop and lets the client choose their preferred style. But for this you would need the licence. If you stock something like global the licence is normally covered.

PRS people called me last week...... the building I rent a room from has a licence but apparently it doesn't cover me as I'm running a seperate business. Don't play music at the moment but if the building has a licence perhaps I should put the CD on in the corridor and leave the door open- sorted!!! lol:lol:

haha good thinking claire bear theres always a loop hole

i am a nail tech and i have the tv on behind me. People love it. And its great company when i am on my own.

Can you broadcast TV in a salon without permission?

Hi,

I don't have a tv in my salon but as far as I understand it you need a
PPL & PRS licence plus a television licence

If I'm waxing I usually put on Radio 2, if I'm massaging I have the three Oriental Wisdom CD's from the Mandarin Oriental that lots of clients comment on how nice they are. I have a huge library of plinky plonky music, but usually just put these on repeat.

I had a letter form PRS last week so I called them (being stiff that I am and liking to comply!). When I said that my salon was at my home they said that as it was not a commercial property I didn't need one.

Hope this helps!

Yeah actually i did hear this from them too.....they do spot checks ringing people....and usually start by asking if you play music in your salon....when i said i worked from home they said "ohh thats fine then"

Hi all

My knowledge of this, is that commercial you need a license to pay music or have the tv on. However for home salons where you will only have one client at a time, a license is not required,

Hope this is correct or I'm in trouble :Scared:

the scottish chillout album, very relaxing and the usual wave, water, whale, bird music but it breaks it all up!

ive never heard of needing a licence to listen to the radio/play music
