I have had quite a few clients now with Shellac all very happy. No major problems. But there always has to be one where things don't go smoothly. One of my ladys has horses and a barn and does everything that comes with these things... She had a Shellac French 10 days ago. She came in 2 days ago as she broke one nail and the Shellac was peeling on that nail and a little lift on her thumb. The thumb nail had been very short when I applied it on her previous appt. as she had broken that one shortly before her appointment. Possible I didn't cap it as good as the others. I redid both nails and didn't charge her. She insisted on having three coats of the negligee rather than two. Fair enought what the client want the client gets. She has now called me to book an appointment for tomorrow to have them done again. Now would you charge her or see it as a repair? She works for a large local business and don't want any bad rep. Would I be unreasonable to expect payment? Do you think the nails don't hold up as well on her because of the three coats and/or the barn + horses?

Not being funny love but they are not steel coated as gigi has said, they will stand up to everyday wear & tear but I think mucking out horses etc is a little more than that. This client needs to understand putting her nails through this will effect them? As we say our nails are jewels not tools!
I'd charge her and explain why, amybe this system is not for her if she is wrecking them so quickly hth xx

I think I'd charge, baring in mind what she does with them, they're not a coat of armour for her nails and cant withstand everything! I bet they still lasted a damn sight better then a regular polish would have still!?

Well it's not because of the 3 coats, lots of peeps have got 2 coats of a dark colour and then 1 coat of a light colour to give a shimmer finish. But having had my own horses, oh god yes, I can instantly think of a couple of products, one is neets foot, it's a hoof strengthener, very good for keeping the hoof flexible and strong, but couple that with the silicon based mane treatments that are commomly used when braiding manes or stripping manes along with the sprays for coat shine and the sprays to discorage horse flys, those are all very drying for our hands and then theres the straw, hay as well as tack cleaning.
Tell her she's been rumbled by a horse loving nail tech, 10 day's is very good, bet she can't keep polish on for a single day:D

Charge her! I charge for ALL repairs that are not my fault and the fault in this case is definitely her lifestyle! If you do Gelish--that might be a better option. I use Gelish and I have poured concrete, trimmed my horse's feet, shod them, groomed them, branded cattle, gardened, etc.--heck I even filed down the length the other day and I still have them on. Really need a fill though! LOL!

I kind of had a feeling you would say that. Feel exactly the same about it but as I am still a very new nailtech my confidence is still lacking quite a bit. Give me pair of feet and I have all the confidencen in the world. I suppose only time and positive feedback from clients will cure that. Luckily I have another lady booked before that who had hers on for 2 weeks. No complains from her so I can always use that to boost my confidence when I need to explain why i have to charge her. Thanks for backing me up guys. :D

You do not need a confidence boost .... of course you must charge her. Even enhancements often will break when using nails to do a job of work ... Shellac is a colour coat NOT a gel or an enhancement product. You charge the full whack and tell her she should be amazed and very pleased that it lasted 10 days!!

Funny you should say that Geeg--my favorite admonishment to my clients is: "Your nails are NOT tools!"

I would charge , even if it is a tiny token amount , I got caught up in offering free repairs with a client I thought it was my fault, and you know what? The more I did her for free the less she looked after them and the more repairs I had to do for her! Where do you draw the line?
So even if it is a small amount that you charge per nail, she wont come to expect it for nothing.
The extra layer wont make a lot of difference if you work thin, and I don't think capping the free edge was your issue, its not like you might think ....if you go on to the shellac lovers group on hear you will see an excellent post Geeg has written explaining about the free edge capping and shellac :)

I am glad I posted my question. My client came in today and broken yet another nail. After all your great replies I just explained to her that with her horses the shellac just can't last the whole two weeks. She was quite happy to pay and realises that Shellac has met its match. Thanks again for your support.

Funnily enough I had a client today ring and ask could I go and replace one of her minx toes (after 2 weeks) which my reply was politely ofcouse if she was will ing to pay me for an hours work which it would take to get there unpack re-pack etc. I also explained that sometimes nails, minx etc will fall off, either by pulling, picking, nipping or other explenation:D If she wanted to come to me this evening I wud gladly be happy to re-apply for cost only and not my time ,,,,mmmm she was busy was her reply.,, strange that yes so am I!!!! xxx
