Do you mean because you don't feel 'good enough' so to speak to say your a hairdresser because of not being fully qualified yet? I'm sure after few customers etc you'll build your confidence up :) .. Could maybe say your a trainee hairdresser? x

When I trained, many many years ago, I went to college on day release for 2 years to qualify and obtain my certificate, but you was expected to gain plenty of experience for another 3 years in the salon. Then you could say you were a fully experienced hairdresser, meaning that you could accept with confidence any client that walked into the salon.

Obviously there are certain areas of hairdressing that even highly experienced stylists cannot do, like wedding hair ups and other specialised areas. x

:D

I know thats what i mean in hairdressing you are forever learning its not the same as a office job for emample id go get a qualfication and then id know how to do spread sheets etc, im quite good at doing hair up :) but i think its just when you feel confident really because i know i can do the basics i.e the basic cuts colour and i love doing colour consultations but its having the confidence to follow through with it x

Yeah lea, its all about the confidence. Its absolutely vital to have bags of it to be a successful hairdresser. If you have it, you should go far.
Even after you qualify and get your papers, you will encounter all sorts of new things. Although us hairdressers need skills in all areas, I always think that its very important to learn and master as many different cuts as you can along with great blowdrying skills. Coloring is equally important too, but just learn new techniques as you go.
I must say, hair ups in definitely NOT an area I can do. I have tried it several times and I'm absolutely cr*p. :D x

Thats so true, i think after my level 3 i will feel alot more confident and carrying on going to my salon placement, and i know think hair up is you can either do it or you cant, i like to be creative so i do enjoy that but then again in most aspects you can be creative especially colour , but i think there will come a point where ill go yes im a hairdresser because it will just feel right but its just when people say to you oh so you do hairdressing and then you reply well yes sort of it just sounds like im not confident and dont trust me lol , x

I qualified with level 3 last yr but in the salon am still classed as junior stylist (we have 2 different price structures, junior and senior but still take all clients) last year I felt weird when clients asked how long id been hairdressing, although I felt confident in what I did I didnt want to put them off by saying I had just completed college so would just say "ive been working here for a year and a half, and have done 2 and a half years at college"

As a salon owner ive always classed my stylists at this level qualified but improvers....so is day you were a junior stylist and shoyld be shadowing someone more advanced and foing basic hairdressing whilst developing your skills....training is ongoing and you should be able to still ask your peers advice and not be intimidated or feel silly by asking for help as id rather be asked than mistakes made!! ...in this industry we are always learning and the day we stop we should give up hairdressing!!!

sorry crappy phone!! **id say you were an improver..junior stylist** fat fingers lol!!!

Lol thats soo true i think thats why its essential that you find the right salon for you and that the salon owner senior stylist understands that. You sound like a very good hairdresser who understands and know how to patient and pass on your skills :) xx
