Hi Guys,

I have been hiding on these forums for a few weeks now and after much research would also like to ask for your professional opinions/experience with regard to training in nail treatments, particularly gels...

My local college do offer courses in nail treatments part time so this is good :) and it is local to where I currently work so easy to get to..

My other alternative would be to attend a course at The Carlton Institute, this is what I would like opinions on and I would really like to hear from those of you that have attended a course particularly in nail treatments!...

I have emailed them but would really like honest opinions on the best way forward..I have a genuine interest in the beauty industry and would like to start with nails :)

I apreciate you probably get these questions all of the time :)

Many thanks

i did vtct at my local college and would definatly recommend it, it was good to spread it out part time over a college year as we had plenty of time to practice and get better whilst learning x

Hi Pink,

I can't really comment on the Carlton Institute or gels but I did a vtct course in nail treatments last year and it was a fast-track course at a private college probabaly similar to the Carlton Institute. I thoroughly enjoyed the course but in a lot of ways I wish I had done the course part-time at my local college over a longer period of time as I feel I'm still lacking in confidence and maybe not as good as I could have been had I have gone to a local college and had the weekly support and guidance of the tutor who could point me in the right direction along the way. I think also talking, watching and learning from other students in the same boat at a local college might also helps to pick things up easier in the long run. Because I did my course long distance and went back for my assessments I feel I did miss out on this so that might also be something to take into cosideration.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific about gels and Carlton Institute but I thought it might also be something else to think about.

You cant beat the education you receive from the big brand names
CND
OPI
Ezflow
are just a few names to get you going but there are lots more,
i would do lots of research before booking on a nail course,
lots of the girls on here will share their experiences with you,
my favorite for education, products, and everything lol is CND

Hi Chicken,

Thanks for the great advice..this is what I thought would definately by the down side to training with the Carlton Institute, I think that I would proably lack confidence if I was to do a 3 day course which is being offered..so I have decided that I should probably go with the course that is being offered at my local college so that I can get all of the practice I need :)

Thank you everyone for your help..its great to get your advice :0

I am looking forward to enrolling and learning all about the trade..

No doubt I will be back with more questions at some point and its really reassuring to know that you are all so happy to help :)

Hi again Pink,

Once you're enrolled on your course you'll have to come back and let us know how it's going. I'm glad some of the comments helped you to make a decision.

Hi Chicken,

Thank you :) I think I will enrol with my college..Can I ask you though since doing your course have you continued with nails or done any further training? Do you work in the industry?

I am currently office based and would probably continue with my full time job but offer treatments in my spare time.

i do nails working from home a few hours a week, i did continue with my full time job until i was made redundant,
i have attended workshops to further my nails (went to a sam biddle workshop a couple weeks ago) i'm also going back to college part-time next month to do my level 3 nail services and level 2 beauty therapy. although nails is my first passion i'm going to add beauty treatments to my services x

I trained with carlton institute about a year and a half ago on the 3 day nail tech course and I would not recomend it, I had no experience in nails befor i started and found 3 days way to short to learn everything, they also teach using uv acrylic which it seems no one else uses, I feel i have self taught myself more than i learnt on the course. From reading threads on here i think that the mani/pedi is out of date too.
I also paid to do an nvq with them but have now decided to ditch everything ive been taught and not do the nvq, i have just booked a place with cnd on a foundation course and going to retrain from scratch and i cant wait.
I hope this has helped you make up your mind and good luck.

Hiya,

Sorry it's taken so long to reply. Yes I have continued with it but I've been a bit sporadic with it to be honest. I had no experience at all to start off with so like Lisa Marie said I found it all too much to take in. Because I've not done a man/ped on a paying client for a few months my confidence with it has been at an all time low.

I've not done any further training but luckily a therapist I work with is helping me out and has been doing one-to-one practice sessions with me to help me build my confidence and learn a few tips and tricks to make life easier. I've just been practicing the painting so far (as this is where I struggle) and I'm coming on leaps and bounds - especially my french believe it or not! I have to say if it wasn't for this lady putting the effort in with me and coming on this forum to pick up hints and tips I would probably have given up by now as I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere.

I've got a man/ped to do this weekend as part of a pamper day this weekend so wish me luck :)
