Hi all,

I'm about to do an intensive Nail Tech course that covers acrylics, gels, fibreglass and silk and manicures. The course doesn't include the starter kit (which I was aware of when I booked). There is the option to purchase a kit which the school has put together, or they will happily give you the list of products within the kit to go to a wholesaler and purchase on your own (they don't add any markup on the kit they sell).

They use Salon Systems to train us with and is in the startup kit. Could anyone please advise me on the quality of these products? I hear so much about OPI and NSI etc and I'm not sure whether to take my list and buy another brand.

It'll be a big outlay to buy everything in the beginning, but it will be worth it, that's why I want to make sure I get the best available products.

I'm also aware that what is good for one technician may not be good for another and it could just be a case of trial and error to see which I prefer to work with. I just thought I'd ask for feedback here first - any is appreciated!

Thanks guys :)

To be honest, I'd use the kit they reccommend. Different products use different mix ratios, ie one will use more liquid to powder than another. If you train using the products the tutor is experienced with, they will be able to help with problems as they've probably come across them before.

Personally I'd say to get used to the ones you're training with, then once you're confident with application, prep etc. you can get sample kits from some of the other companies so you can see if you work better with them. But don't do this too soon, you'll only confuse yourself!

Good luck with the course x

That's great advic Ditzy, thanks for that - suppose it makes sense really. I'm probably going to have lots of Q's after the course so best to ask them questions on products they're familiar with!

Didn't realsie I would be able to get samples either, that could save me a lot of pennies on buying new products everytime. Thanks again :)

I agree with Ditzy.

In any case, a reputable company would not be happy to sell a student any professional products prior to a class. CND and OPI wouldn't for sure.

Learn your basics and then do product training with the company who supplies the products you want or decide to work with.

Cheers for that too geeg! I've just bought the book 'Nail Structure and Product Chemistry' by Douglas Schoon to give me some bedtime reading before my course starts in July. I'm so keen to start, it's just a shame I have to wait ages! :)
