Hello

I’m designing a window decal for my car and decided to go for a clear background as I don’t want my rear view restricted. I’m trying to choose the colouring for the text and I feel that when looking at a rear view window from the outside that the window can look quite dark so I’m thinking a bright goldfish colour of text might be best. However, Vistaprint have recommended black text which I can’t imagine will be terribly visible against the darkness of the window. Does anyone have experience of using window decals on rear view windows and what colours do or don’t work?

White or red is good, black is rubbish so is dark colours like purple

Red fades the worst

Clear vinyl won't look good nor stand the test of time unless it's specific vehicle vinyl. What should be used on rear windows is a vinyl called OWV (one way vision). It's made up of 50% hole and means you can see out without noticing much different but people on the outside just see your print. It's clever. Just make sure nothing is too small or it could be hard to read with the holes.

Normally you should your logo and phone number on these things.

Remember it will 100% affect your car insurance as you'll need a policy for work and make them aware it has advertising on it which will put your premiums up a bit. If you don't tell them and get in an accident you're uninsured.

Iv always used white and there are loads of people doing it in eBay that are brillient service

Oh thanks everyone for your replies. Regarding the insurance. Is that because vision is obstructed? As I won’t be using the car for working.

Having a decal on your car does not affect vision or insurance driving instructors have them all over their car

But driving instructors have specialist driving instructor insurance and it is insured for work purposes :)
My dads a driving instructor.

Even if you aren't using your vehicle for work you're advertising on it so technically more risk of being broken into. Same for work vans etc.
It may not make any difference to the price but they need to know. It's just a declaration to make and be aware of :)

A thread on it - https://www.uksignboards.com/topic50956.html

Thanks for that!

Yes it does, my premiums were nearly double with sign writing

Adding any decals to your car is classed as a modification and you must advise your insurers when applying for a quote or you risk being uninsured. So even if you added some pretty bubbles along the side with no advertising, it’s still classed as a modification.

I love the example given of the vicar at the beginning of this article. :)

And it is not just car insurance you need to worry about. In my youth, many many years ago, I was a despatch rider in London and I was told (presumably with good reason) never to go into Hyde park with my advertising ‘bib’ on as this could be construed as using the park for commercial purposes which was against some local bye-law or other.

Sign writing maybe a decal not mine I checked but maybe different companies have different rules

Gosh. It’s incredible how many things one has to think off just to get a small business up and running! Thank you for all the info. Glad I asked.

No prob I'm going to ring mine again and double check the rules because they prob change them periodically

For a question such as this it might be better to email them. That way you will have someting in writing that they can not go back on. That brilliant link from AcidPerm shows what some of these insurance companies are like.
