I know this topic has been brought up before but I thought I'd bring it up again.

Now, I might just be a grumpy old woman (GOW) but does any one else get irritated by bad spelling and grammar on here (and everywhere else)?

I can understand problems with grammar if English isn't the writers first language but for most it is. Bad spelling has no excuse as there is a continual spell check. Some words have different spellings i.e. there and their, but getting words like these wrong comes back to grammar.

People not correcting misspelt or paying some attention to correct English, I think, are being rude and disrespectful. It like eating with your mouth open; just general manners.

People posting on here are often asking for some help. Don't you think there should be some basic manners in there that require an attempt at good grammar and correctly spelled words?

Or am I just a GOW??:eek:

Hi,

I totally agree with you! :)

I totally agree with you but I am guilty of this sometimes. Most of the time I'm viewing/posting on my phone. It has predictive text and sometimes I don't notice when it's chosen the wrong word. However, when I'm on my laptop there's no excuses.

it doesnt really bother me, i know a lot of people do struggle with it.
it can make posts harder to understand though.

i try to let it wash over me, bigger fish to fry etc.

i do mind if people use text talk though, that seems lazy.

The text speak also annoys loads of us. I will sometimes correct it and PM the poster to ask them to please not use it, but they never reply.

We should ask ourselves the question - would we speak to a teacher in the way we type in here and if the answer is no then change it.

This is a regular gripe and sometimes it gets heated so lets keep this one constructive.

When you are asking for help from highly respected professional people then you should be asking respectfully!

Nicely put :)

I don't want this to get heated. Just making a gentle point.

I do think that everyone deserves a bit of respect though. I try to make a point of being polite to everyone (even some ignorant 'celebrities') as I believe that you 'get back what you give'. Doesn't always work though:confused:

I type very quickly and always have to edit after i have posted.
A lot of people use the word loose when they mean lose ive noticed.

Advice and advise is another one that pops up a lot.

That one really bugs me :irked:
Loose = not tight
Lose = lost
Another one is their/there
their = someone's
there = a place

Bad spelling jumps off the page at me.
Although we can't all be good at spelling .......... bad grammar is unforgiveable. :smack:
Am I a GOW too ?

:eek:

Mmmm shouldn't there be an apostrophe and an 's' there! :lol:

One that drives me mad is when people put; ' to air on the side of caution', instead of 'err on the side of caution'.
I think some people are just not great at spelling. It's not their fault if spelling isn't their forte.
Text talk drives me mad though as i have a job to understand what they are saying sometimes :irked:

Sometimes I get so excited about asking a question or replying - spelling doesn't even come into it!:eek:

My pet hate for spelling is college and collage............makes me quite:green:

I fink its dusgistin tha way sum peopls tipe tha writun word :irked:

Thank god for spell check for us dyslexic folk :hug:

I am probably guilty of the spelling side of things, I cant get spell check to work on here:confused:

My pet hate is not capitalising sentences, and in particular using a capital "I" for one's self; it's almost like a person thinks they are not important enough to deserve capitalisation! That said, I don't particularly get annoyed by it, although I'd be lying if I said I didn't perceive people differently because of it!

I'm sure spell check can be enabled for everyone but even spell check won't correct words that are spelled correctly but not for the way they are being used.

I loath text type and spend hours changing it so that our members who do not speak English as their first language can understand the posts.

To me it is a simple case of having some manners and some consideration for other members AND frankly, keeping our site looking professional and the poster looking professional.

Some of my pet hates

Using been when you mean being and
and draw when you mean drawer
and collage when you mean college (and this from college teachers even :rolleyes:)
saying I done when you mean I did
etc etc

The problem always seems worse when we get the new influx of users at term time ... They never read the site rules (which they should) and pile on here with the usual barrage of questions (which is fine) and sort of take over for awhile until everything simmers down again. :hug: another GOW

I am the first to put my hand up on this. My spelling and grammer is pits..!!

But I google my spellings when I write in a post, then read and re-read the post to see if it sounds fluent enough grammer wise. Sometimes I miss a few bits, but when I realise, I always go back and edit it.

Although I am guilty of this, I don't feel this thread is directed at me though because I know I try. Now that is the difference I think.

Paragraphs and sentances. That is what gets my heckles up!

I can understand that people make spelling mistakes, either because they have difficulty with spelling or because their keyboard is pants (like mine:rolleyes:).

But when people write huge, long essays without a break then I'm afraid I give up and don't even attempt to read to the end! It hurts my eyes.

That is lazy and inconsiderate to the reader. :evil:

I hate all the slang and text speak, but as far as bad spelling goes, I like to make allowances for people. Yes, I do notice it and I cringe at times, but not everyone has had good schooling, which isn't their fault. xxx

I sometimes get carried away and make silly little typos but I hate the wrong "there" and text speak!
