I am wanting to work from home as a nail artist but I'm having trouble as to where to start with building up a client list.

I came up with an idea of approaching a salon in my area and asking them to display my work then take any bookings which I would then carry out at my house. Then they would take a percentage of what I earn.

I would love to actually work in a salon but I have a 10 month old son and nursery fees are like daylight robbery.

Does anyone else do this or think it's a good or bad idea?

Any advise would be great.

Personally I wouldn't make that kind of arrangement with the salon.

Do they have a nail tech there? If not, you could have a chat with them and offer that if you prehaps do their nails for free, or a heavily discounted price, that they could recommend you to clients enquiring about nails, and prehaps keep some of your business cards on hand to hand out.

What do you plan to do with your child when doing nails? You will have to have some alternative arrangement for him while you are working, and if the salon is making your appts it would prehaps cause problems with short notice. At least if you were booking your own appts you would have a better picture of when you can do it.

This is all just my opinion... I might be completely wrong but just a few things for you to consider :)

No your not wrong, I appreciate your advise.

My son sleeps for 3 hours during the day (between 11 and 2) then I thought when my daughter came home from school she could take him upstairs for an hour or so and then I could go mobile when my husband comes home from work. It sounds good written down but probably wouldn't end up working.

I can see what you mean about appointments at short notice, perhaps I haven't thought about it properly.

ive just seen your post and thought id write and ask if you are planning on having a slaon at home or being mobile.

Ive not done nails for a long time and ive just bought the airbrushing and nail art course from essential nails as its on offer, ive done gel, acrylic pedicure etc with star nails years ago but im thinking later this year or next if we start a family its something i coudl develop at home.

My husband is a corgi plumber and he did a house to house leaflet drop and my god the amount of business he has got from that is really good.

I would see what local salons are charing adn what services they do and then get a good leaflet and see how it goes, you could even say you do certain times and evenings then at least you can prepare for those times in advance

hope to hear from you soon Tanya

I tried working from home for about 3 or 4 months and it didn't go so well. I made up fliers at the end of it and went from business to business asking them to post them for me which a lot of them did and then I went to parking lots of bigger businesses and schools and put them on car windows and this still didn't bring me any business. I have a five year old and tried to work around her and it was very frustrating, my husband would watch her when he was home but it was still difficult. I now rent a space at a salon downtown and my clientel is building much quicker and honestly it is so great getting out of the house and interacting with the public. The salon consists of two hairdressers and myself as a nail tech so it's small but they have an established clientel that I draw from and we share all the cost three ways as far as rent, bills and advertising. I started out part-time at first till things started getting busier and I find being in a salon that I get walk-ins every once in a while which is always a delight! Hope this helps, may not be what you want to here but I think you have to have your clientel developed before you can consider working from home. Good luck in all that you do

I started off working from home 18months ago and now I am going to open my own salon in May. I gained my clients through leaflet drops by offering free toes with a full set of acrylics, it worked and thankfully I kept 80per cent of the clients but good luck which everway you decide to work it

I would work from home during the day and go mobile in the evenings and weekends.

I'm getting some business cards made and I've had a couple of salons say that they would put a few on their counter which is a start.

you can get business cards done quite cheap i think online if you put in free business cards, you get quite a few and all you pay is the postage, we did this with my husband for his plumbing cards

if anyone else has good ideas for promotion, please let me know

I made a site to help me out. So far, its brought me a lot. A lot of my clients said it made me look more professional, and more motivated at trying to get myself going. Working from home is hard, I myself just started. You just have to promote yourself to those who you know are going to pass the word along. There's no better way of getting yourself known, than good ol' word-of-mouth. A good comment from a trusted friend to another, will always bring you more business.
