hi there, i am new to this site and would really appreciate some help!!

i am a trainee nail tech and love it, and i'm doing well with it, but i have hit a wall. i have been doing a few friends, my neighbour's and my sister's nails for a little while now, with no real issues, but my sis has come back to me with a slightly yellowing thumb, which wasn't hugely noticeable, but it was obvious up close.

then my neighbour's middle and index finger on one of her hands has gone very very yellow after 3 days of a new set. i have used different products on each of them, but used the same products on other people, including myself with no problem.

if it was a product problem, wouldn't it affect all the nails? they do not use sun beds, and my neighbour doesn't smoke, and they say they haven't done anything they could think of to cause it. i am using the same brand powder and liquid (to ensure compatibility), the products are new. why is it affecting only a couple of fingers? and why on them?

is it something i am doing? the products are not cheap and the powder has no mma and my acrylic brush is clean. i do not want to do anyone else's nails until this is resolved as they might think it's me and that i am rubbish or using naff products which i'm not!!!!! this is puzzling mew and any suggestions would be great and really appreciated!!! thanks!!!!:)

You say you have been using a couple of different brands-have you used two different brushes for each of your monomers liquids?

If it is not happening to all ,it is something they are doing whether they know what or not.

Smoking ... squeezing tea bags ... currie .. makeup ... hair colour ... all sorts of things can be the culprit. It's aprocess of elimination for THEM not for you. Ask them to take note of what they are doing.

Does the staining buff off when you prepare for a rebalance or does it go right through? This is important to know.

If the primer(if you use one) didn't dry completely before applying product that might cause the yellowing... this is the only suggestion I have...

yes it was totally dry.............thanks for the suggestion!!

Hello

I know when I used to have yellowing on my acrylic its because the primer wasn't dry or I let the primer touch the acrylic and that caused staining......

But like Gigi says its a process of elimination....tea, coffee, cigs, detergents and even some soaps can cause discolouring.

Hang in there.......

xx

Brush contamination is what I thought, but you said that your brush was clean at the end. Plus, that wouldn't really explain why only a couple of nails are affected.

If you just can't narrow it down and you think it is something they are exposing their nails to, you might want to look into a gel top coat that is impervious to stains, dyes, solvents, etc. Perma Gloss from NSI is one.

Ok, it seems to me that you have, as you say above, used different products - one sort on your sister & another sort on your neighbour.
So.....what products did you use on each person? Then you said you used the same product, so I'm a bit confused?

Did you use a different system - as in gel on one & L&P on the other, or different liquid & Powder (L&P) on both of these - such as NSI L&P on one person & Millennium L&P on the other (I have not yet checked your profile to see which system/brand you have done your training with)?

If you change from one brand to another, it's a good idea to use one brush for one brand, and another brush for the other to avoid cross contamination.

Another thing could be that if you have allowed your brush (L&P) to dry out with old monomer in it, then the ferrule could become full of old, dried out product, if it has not been cleaned properly before storage and then once wet with new monomer - the old could cause yellowing of your product.
Never allow your L&P brush to dry out. If you are not going to use it for awhile, then just keep rinsing it out in clean monomer every other day or so.
I would say that your problem is mostly due to the brush becoming dried out.
If you are not using it everyday, like in a salon type situation, then rinse it by putting some fresh monomer into a dappen dish and swish your brush in it, then store it - bristles down or flat, not standing up with the bristles in the air, as any old dirty monomer which has not been washed out will settle into the ferrule (the part where the bristles meet the metal) and dry out & contaminate your brush. Then it's time to buy a new brush!
You could always try one of Nailzoo's tricks, which is to give your kolinsky sable a shampoo & condition with a good quality shampoo, then allow to dry set into your normal shape.
Never, btw, touch your bristles with your fingers, this will allow oils from your hands onto your bristles of the brush - more contamination!!
Treat your brush with the reverence it deserves - it's your best tool when it comes to L&P.
I hope some of that helps you:hug:

I think what she's trying to say is: she used different brands for the clients, but didn't mix the brands on each person (one brand for each person)? Is that correct?

I once had a similar problem, just a few of the nails stained in a sort of marbelized way, not all. In my case it was contermination af my brush, at an early stage:green: (can you say that, it sounds so morbid) and I couldn't actually "see" it in the brush or on the wipe, but by chance I picked it up a few days later and when I washed it out in monomer (again to keep them drying out) there was a little yellowing on the wipe.

My yellowing was all the way through though, and as Gigi wrote thats essential to know... My oppinion is when the yellowing can be buffed of or is only under the free edgde it's the client. If it's all the way through you have to eliminate the possibility that it is you (it still could be the client too)

Yes, didn't think about that!
Good point. If it buffs off, it's not anything you have done.

hi there, thanks all for the advice!! i used millenium l&p on one client and dream l&p on the other, and used the same top coat. but i have used both of these brands on myself and another friend, without any probs!! i do clean my brush thoroughly but i might try the shampoo thing or maybe a get a different brush for each brand. i will check to see if it buffs off or goes all the way through. i will buy a special top coat to see if that helps. many thanks to all!!!!!!! xxx
