EST2000 facial steamer (older model)- what's this bit for?

Hi All, and I may be really dumb for asking this but have bought second hand a facial steamer and just wondering what the sliver metal bit is for? Its not where the steam comes out, but is on the path of where

the steam flows? Any ideas?

OOh could be! Great suggestion I wonder if the toe rope thingys woudl fit in it, could soak those in an essential oil!
