Just a thought - haven't tried them - but there are special foils the a jagged, zig-zag edge that slides up closer into the root. Some of them even have almost a velcro underside at the top that hold the foil in place. Maybe these would stop slippage, allow you to get closer to the root and at least soften your line if nothing else is working for you...
