Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to Salon Geek :) I'm currently doing a Level 2 beauty specialist diploma part time and I'm hoping to go on and do further courses in Gelish manicures and gel nails. I have also completed spray tan training.

My plan was to go mobile once I've completed all these courses and spent some time practicing on friends and family. Do you think salon experience is essential before going mobile, or is it merely a case of gaining confidence in your ability and just going for it?

I totally think it depends on you. I have never been employed in a salon. I worked a little mobile and from home and now own a salon and have never had a problem.
I think it depends on how you conduct yourself, how professional you are and how good you are at treatments that will determine whether it not you are successful, not whether or not you've worked in a salon.

I think it depends on your own confidence in yourself. Sometimes it's nice to have a little reassurance or a second opinion from someone else when you're first starting out and you're less likely to get that if you work alone. I've also found that I learn a lot of different techniques/methods from just watching other people around me. Although I think if you regularly attend training courses then you'd get the same thing [emoji4] xx

Thanks for the replies, reckon the confidence will probably come with loads of practice!

I think salon environment is great to get feedback and advice, learn from others and make sure you don't develop any bad habits. Not matter how many courses you attend nothing can replace another's therapists experience and knowledge to help you grow. Therapists working in salons have a better understanding of clients and what they like, very different from training environment. Good luck!

I agree with Zabulec. Although I did practice on friends, it was never the same as doing it on a proper paying client. I had some short but v useful work experience in a couple of salons before I went on my own. The work experience was unpaid but was the best thing I did. I gained so much more than from my training and from practice.

I came straight out of college and opened my own salon, and I really didn't struggle with it. As long as its something you enjoy and feel passionate about then you'll be fine. You'll have moments where your more confident than others but this will grow and you'll learn along the way. If all else fails act confident! I've now left the salon and am going mobile to fit in with family life more, but I am glad of my experience as its taught me a lot for this time around.

I went straight from college to working as a mobile massage therapist without salon experience. Everything worked out very well for me. I do not feel you 'need' salon experience before going mobile at all.

Remember safety is more of an issue when working mobile though, just something to bear in mind.

Thanks everyone, I really feel like mobile is the way I want to go. I do need salon hours though for my course so I suppose that will give me a bit more of an insight into the differences.

Try it......you just might like it! :)

I've been qualified for 13 years and have worked mobile ever since. I have never worked in a salon. It's been perfect for me. I have no desire to ever work in a salon, much happier being my own boss, I come and go as I please.
