One of the key contributors to your business success, as well as, financial and time freedom, is being able to find and keep great staff.
You’ll know a great staff member when you find a person who has a
• Naturally strong work ethic
• naturally high achieving personality
• And genuinely cares for your business and therefore you.
I know it may sound too good to be true but there are plenty of great staff out there.
Unfortunately, a lot of salon owners allow lazy comfort seeking staff to work within their business, run it into the ground and push away customers who are unsatisfied with their poor performance.
If you are new in business or have been operating your business for a few years now and are upset by the way staff has underperformed or disrespected your business (and therefore you) then I feel you need to read on.
You see the problem most salon owner’s face is that you need to carry out so many roles in order to ensure that your business runs smoothly.
As a salon owner you’re probably
• backlogged with financial paperwork
• need to create marketing or advertising to ensure you get new clients in the door
• conducting treatments
• ensuring the smooth running of your salon
• creating orders
• doing stocktakes
• networking with other businesses
• managing and training staff

So having to deal with poor performing staff is just one extra task that you don’t want to have to add to that growing list of duties.
If you feel you haven’t had much luck when it comes to recruiting staff… don’t beat yourself up!
My guess is that you haven’t had any formal training in recruitment
So let’s start with the fundamental advertisement you’ll be placing online or in your local paper.
Your advert matters!
When you advertise, make sure you stand out from the crowd by making your ad a little different from everybody else’s.
Please don’t do this:
“Busy salon requires hairdresser/beautician for ____position
To enquire call__________”
Why not? Because everybody else is doing it. It’s generic. Doesn’t specify the qualities you are looking for in your new staff member and will therefore bring you a high response rate…but not of the type of staff you really want.
However, if you have countless hours to sift through resumes and interview bad candidates then that is what you’ll be doing with an advert like this one.
So make your life easier by getting specific about what you want from the beginning and place them in your ad.
If you ask for somebody who is honest, hardworking, passionate about the industry, confident in their abilities as well as energetic and self-motivated, then you are more likely to get them.
By pointing out that only self-motivated, energetic people with a passion for the industry need apply. You will end up with a superior level of candidates. You have effectively excluded the lazy, comfort seeking candidates simply because they don’t relate to the listed qualities.
You want to let the applicants know that if they work for you, that they will be part of a professional, progressive business with opportunity for career advancement and/ ongoing training. What have you done by wording your job advertisement this way?
You are letting your potential new staff member know what's in it for them- career advancement, ongoing training and being aligned with a business that is both progressive and professional. It isn't always all about the money for staff. Highly motivated staff are selective as well. So let them know you’re on the same page.
Hope this helps in the pursuit of more time and money freedom to do the things that matter most to you.
