Many salons are looking for inexpensive ways to optimize their sales in an ever growing competitive market. Marketing is critical for the success of your business; however it doesn’t always have to cost the earth.

It is important to look internally at your salon. Your client database is your most important asset, make sure this is managed effectively, include your friends, family and those clients you gained from previous promotions. Target these customers and potential customers with an email promotional campaign and then ask them to forward the offer on to their friends, this could almost double the awareness of your salon consequently helping expand your client base.

Work with community organisations, local schools or charities. You could get involved with a community event, school evening or charity gala. A number of local people are attracted to these events so it provides you with the opportunity to meet many prospective clients, let them sample your work and hopefully transfer them into a regular booking.
You could also work with the school/charity and give them a small percentage of proceedings; this will strengthen your brand image and reputation and then they will do the marketing for the event for you! Supporting these organisations or groups is an effective way to stand out and become a positive figure in the community and a perfect way to showcase your products and services and to increase exposure to your salon, it can also be an excellent framework for PR coverage.

Giving instant vouchers for a return visit is a further low cost marketing technique, when your clients come to pay you can present them with a voucher for 10% off their next visit, make sure you give them a defined time limit. This offer gives them a discount at a place they like and generates a solid call to action as they will have to return before the voucher expires.

As you will be looking to build long term value with your marketing efforts it is essential that you track how effective they are, this will allow you to repeat successful strategies and discard of those which turned out to be a waste of time. This can be done by including a quoted promotion code with every campaign and keep track of how many returning clients the promotion generated.
