Hi all,

I'm am completely new to all this so please bear with me! I'm thinking of starting up a salon from home. I am currently doing training in nails, waxing and tanning. I'm not sure how to go about things. I'm thinking it will be easier in the long run to work from home than mobile however I'm not sure how to start this! Will I need to set up a business? I will need a lot of practise first so don't want loads of outgoings once trained!

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Xx

Hi, I have recently started my own business specialising in waxing. Im mainly mobile, but have managed to rent a room in a holistic therapy clinic 2 days a week. I have registered as self employed with inland revenue. We have to pay a different class national insurance, and will get sent tax returns to do every year, but this really is it - or so ive been told! just check though that your mortgage deeds / rental contract allows you to operate a business from your home. And make sure your book keeping is meticulous!!!

I've been doing nails 10 years, 8 of those from home. You should definitely be either home or mobile, one or the other, don't do what I did and do a bit of each, it's a complete nightmare, always packing up or setting it back up again, forgetting things and having to return home, which makes you late for everyone (mind you this only happened as I got busier), this was when I decided to give mobile up and work from home and the stress levels went down instantly

With regards to the tanning, I have just given up (eighteen months after my tanning training) as I could not get over the overspray problem which in a salon or separate room wouldn't have been a problem probably, but in a lounge with white paintwork and a beautiful limestone fireplace, WAS a problem in that it was turning the paintwork and fireplace a pinky tan colour which would not come off. I felt I couldn't take the tanning to someone else's house either because of this. I followed all the tips I could find on here and elsewhere and don't get me wrong, it wasn't a great deal but it DOES build up after a time.

Just my thoughts, good luck with it all, great fun xx
