Im opening a new hair salon any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have owned a salon before and sold it last year I got a job working in retail but realised it was just a hiding to nothing and really miss being self employed and the freedom it entails. A lot of people warned me that once you have been self employed in my case for eight years its very hard to go back to being an employee I had to learn the hard way of course.
My old business originated as sunbed shop and did really well for the first few years and then I went and retrained as a Hairdresser as I had originally been an apprentice for Charles Worthington in London but I never completed my training due to the financial aspect of living In London and the wages an apprentice gets.
I have no intention of getting into the sunbed game again as it entails long hours and gets so much bad press. Im just worried if there's a market for a new salon as there seem to be salon's opening and closing every few weeks these days.
Just wondered how other salon's are doing what your main area of business is and how you recruit new customers? Should I go down the extention route are brazillian blow drys doing well for people? And is there a large number of repeat business for route re touches etc?
Im just worried because the last time I had a salon the majority of customers we seemed to attract where colour corrections from xxl box dyes etc and just worried a hair salon is a big risk in todays economy.
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi darling, I don't live in the UK so it's hard for me to say.
Here in Melbourne opening a salon (thats profitting) is ALOT of hard work, you're either a high end salon or a salon that hardly makes any profit and is never busy.
I'm currently doing hair extensions from home and I am studying beauty therapy and saving for a salon (building a clientele). Alot of salon owners I know (hair & beauty salons) start off by working from home to gain their clients back. Iff you rush into being a salon owner lot of things could go wrong. You have to make sure that everything is perfect budget wise, products, appearance nd etc. It's easy opening a salon but its not easy opening a salon that will be busy. Keep in mind if you do tart working from home do it for a little bit gain experience, clients, confidence and then go to a salon! This is my opinion but everywhere is different, here in melbourne people would prefer going to a salon tht has had previous experience, or a salon with cheap prices. I was working in a salon for 3 yrs she started off by charging $10 for a cut and currently charges $50. It's just milestones, take your time, don't rush into things because it will all come to you! Like I said it's easy owning a salon but not easy owning a salon that is profiteering.
Goodluck and best wishes xxo

Thanks for your feedback Elaine I know how to run a good hair salon its just a case of taking a risk and charging real prices or getting involved in price wars.
I dont know how the Australian economy is but in the Uk its really tough and the days of women coming in for a blowdry twice a week and and there roots every 3 weeks have long gone. Im just wondering if it would be better going down a specialist extension centre or colour correction salon rather than just another hair salon cause one seems to open and shut every 3 months round are area.

If you went down the specialist route I think it's a good idea but need to make sure the area can sustain it. You need to try and analyze why salons shut every 3 months in your area. Is it not enough clientele? Specializing in something can be really good but limits your potential market so need to be in a very busy area.
