I have just taken on a hair and beauty salon 6 months ago and wondered does anyone have a list of staff rules or conduct? I am having so many staff problems.

hiya
we have a code of conduct which has a list of 'rules' for staff to stick to, and a salon policy, with things like smile, take the clients coat, treat others as you wish to be, etc, which staff are meant to be guided by.
What sort of staff problems are you having? Ive worked in a few different places in the past year (unfortunatly) and have seen numerous staff problems.......

Basically them being lazy when i am not there, going sick when they have loads of clients in. Falling out with each other making the salon have a terrible atmosphere!!
There hairs change colour every other week!

God its so hard.
Does anyone want to buy a hair and beauty salon in sale, cheshire!!

sounds like you just need to come down hard on them, issue verbal then written warnings, if it ends up you haveing to fire one of them then fine, its the only way to pull everyone back into control. the salon im wokring at at the moment is quite like that and its not a nice place to work when the stff dont care.

Thats exactly how i feel like they don't care, i have only had it for 6 months and i am like there friend more than the owner and i think they are starting to take the Michael!!
Thanks for your help

If I got a written warning for changing my hair colour every week I think I wold laugh.

But hun, I do feel for you - is there one trouble maker in particular? Or are they all ganging up on one girl because they are jealous?

Maybe have a staff meeting with them all and say that this kind of behaviour cannot continue. But try to look at the bigger picture, and dont just keep your favourites and sack the rest, hopefully they will pull together as a team before you go grey!!

best of luck

NO i meant they are using the salon stock to change there colour.

oh my gosh! well I would put a stop to that right now! call a staff meeting and say that they dont take any salon stock to do their own hair/skin/nails with, without getting permission and paying for product, that you wont pay sick pay, that you will be giving each staff an individual apprasal every 3 months, and that you dont take no ****!!!

Hopefully the backstabbing troublemakers will not like the new you, so they will be the ones that leave anyway!!

best of luck

i find there is normally one girl who is the centre of the troublemaking and the others just follow. do you feel like this rachel? id start with individual apprasials next week and give them all a pep talk and then see how that goes, explain you will be giving verbal warnings when you deem nessesary, and try to start seperating yourself as a friend to a boss with them. i know thats hard but you need to do that to create that respect...

agreed and I dont get it - some people are so lucky to have a job in the first place! Some geeks have worked their little bums of for years doing training, and cant get employed for toffee, then some girls get really lucky and dont realise it! aaaaaargh makes me mad:mad:

It is a tricky situation, but can be easy for everyone if you set ground rules from the start. They all need to know what is expected of the, what is acceptable and what isnt etc. The girls may think its a perk of the job to use salon stock as some places dont mind you doing this. We have a salon price list with the staff prices written next to each treatment, and if the girls want something done then they arrange to stay behind with a colleague and pay the staff price (which is our product cost).

You need to regain control, set some fair rules which everyone can live by, and have a meeting to explain the new procedures and to answer any questions. An out of control salon with a bad atmosphere will deter customers - and put these girls out of their jobs - maybe they need to have all this explained to them.

If they have been allowed to do what they want then they will do whatever they like, they just need some firm but fair guidance. Do it the right way and you can turn this situation around very quickly. Good luck hun!

Book half a day out of the diary so that the staff are still getting paid. Call it STAFF TRAINING.

Sit them all down (have all of this written down).

Start off by thanking them all for making you welcome and now that you have found your feet and got used to the place, you have now been open 6 months.

ask if they have any suggestions for up and coming promotions.

For a professionally run salon you will need to set down some basic standards so that everyone is greeting and treating clients the same.

go through booking procedure (do they know who answers the phone). greeting and seating. treatment procedure. finishing the treatment, ie book next appointment and sell retail products. (perhaps have an incentive for selling retail).

then go into cleaning rota, and staff incentives, ie getting their haircut and coloured. You then tell them what you are happy with.

I rent rooms in a hairdressers and all the staff get on great, they are all lovely. the owner works part-time but a member of her family works there too when she isn't there.

She is their friend, they all get on and they go out socialising together.

But, they all ask her permission to get their hair done.

They all buckle down and do cleaning.

They are not in competition with each other.

Even when she cracks the whip, they respect her for it.

I pay for my hair, and they pay for their treatments with me.

have you had a meeting with them yet? any progress>x

NO i meant they are using the salon stock to change there colour.

Hi,

The salon that I work at lets us use the products for our hair because if our hair looked really bad with huge re-growth it would be bad for business however we all have to stay back on an agreed evening every 4 weeks to do each others hair and nails, we decide what we want done before hand and let the boss know the day before. This is always a great night as it gives us all time with the girls away from the clients to have a good catch up, generally if any of the girls have any problems it comes out on this night and we all laugh about it and sort it out as the friends we are.

HI

I do sympathize with you staff can be a right nightmare to manage!

However some of the fault does lie with you hun  You have to set out clear guide lines.

You are not there full time i gather?? Have you appointed a member of staff to be in charge when you are not there?

Are your staff paid hourly or on a salary?

If they are paid hourly they should be filling in a time sheet, if they are having there hair done then they should be signing off for this, you are already paying the girl who is doing there hair for them you certainly shouldn't be paying them to sit on their backsides and have their hair done!!

If they are having their hair done without your permission then that's out of order you need to tackle all of these problems straight away, you can do this in a general staff meeting or you can do it with individual appraisals. Its important to do regular appraisals be it annually or every 3-6 months.

At appraisals you can evaluate your staff's performance ie their takings/wages ratio, any commission, targets you have set etc etc also it's a good opportunity to have a chat about any issues or problems that have arisen.

Staff need clear rules to be set out and they need enforcing, if they don't know what the rules are then as far as they are concerned they aren't doing anything wrong.

As for staff hair Do's either make them pay for the color they use or put a limit on it, ie 1 color / hair done per month per member of staff. If they want it doing more than that they have to pay full price.

There is a fine line with being someones friend and being there boss, you need them to respect you and your authority.

Best of luck if you need anymore help we are here wise owls that we are

That's a great idea!

It works really well, we had a bit of a problem at first with people saying they didnt want to stay behind unpaid etc but we make a good night of it now, we get a take-away and have a few drinks and always have a great laugh, clients love it because we always wear new hairstyles to show up and coming fashions and we love it because its like having a huge girls night in, hair nails spray tan etc.

It is important for salon girls and guys to have a good friendships as we spend more time at work that anywhere and in my case working with another 8 girls can get a bit hairy at times, if we didnt have a blow out each month i think we would all go crazy
:)

that sounds like a great idea, i may suggest that at our salon, we have 20 girls!!! it can get VERY hairy, and i think a good blow out now and again would be good.
hair wise, we normally say you come in on your day off as the salon is open 6days a week, so then you are doing it in your own time, yet there still has to be a limit as some staff would go in every week!!
