Sidewalls...don't understand?

Hi all
Something I just can't seem to get to understand is that when you put the pink product on the nail plate and push it out to the side, you are supposed to leave a margin of about 1mm (so don't go all the way to the edge). I always seem to get left with a ridge then though. What am I doing wrong please?

Hi Donna,
As you bring your bead out to the sides thin it out, So that it tapers thinner at the sidewalls.
