I'm a Nail geek and was hoping one of you lovely skin geeks might be able to help me out. My friend has a rash on her shin and went to the doctor with it, but he had no idea what it was. :irked:

It's not painful or itchy. It's not raised or bumpy at all.

It looks like a carpet burn or burst blood vessels. I thought maybe her boots were rubbing off her leg, but if that was the case her other leg would have a rash too and it doesn't and as I said it's not raised. It's very obvious on her leg as it's quite red and angry looking.

Her skin is very bad lately and she has broke out in a lot of spots on her face.... could it be connected or just a coincidence?

The only advise she was given by the doctor was to not shave or wax her legs.

I've posted a pic in my profile (funny it looks worse in real life), if you could have a look, maybe one of you would know by looking at it what it could be, or maybe you've seen it before.

I know we can't diagnose, but it's very annoying for her to have this rash and as if that's not bad enough, she can't even shave her legs :Scared:, so any advice would be great.

If it is broken blood vessels it should heal in under a week. I think as it is not itchy or broken skin the doctor probably doesn't see it as a real problem. Have no idea what it is but if it was on my leg I would put some aloe vera on it although it will probably just go on it's own. She will just have to be grateful for now that it's the winter so she can wear trousers!

Thanks Weezie

I thought the same thing about it being winter. :) I'd just love to know how you get burst blood vessels in the first place?... I know you'd get them on your face from the cold weather and age, but I wonder how or why she got them on her leg???

Had she been wearing socks?Could be boots were rubbing,it looks like broken blood vessels to me to.Has she been wearing wellies(cold weather/snow)maybe they were rubbing.I'm sure it will clear up soon given the fact there is no irritation.

That's what I thought too, but she says she doesn't think that would be it. I've just sent her a text and she says she's had it for 6 months!!.

It actually looks much worse when you see it in the flesh and it doesn't look like it's fading at all so maybe it's not burst blood vessels!!?!!

Is it on just one leg?if it's on both is it in the same place? Is there no itching at all?Get her to look at her boots, try them on without socks/tights,does the irritation fall in line with a seam or the top of the boot?

It's just on one leg. I was thinking on the same lines as you, so I had a look at her other leg and it's perfect.. not a blemish.

I asked if her boots could be rubbing against her leg, but her boots were kinda short and the rash is higher up than the boots.

Well I think given the fact that it's not on both legs or anywhere else on her body, plus the Dr was unconcerned, then it's something that hopefully will clear up.Our skin can become quite dehydrated this time of year and we tend to cover up to keep warm.Hopefully things will improve once she starts exposing her legs a bit more, some things just need to follow their course to recover. At least it's not ezcema which I have,it's a total nightmare.

As she has had this for 6 month and it hasn't improved, I would insist on a referral to a Dermatologist...... a GP is a general practitioner, she wants someone that specialises in this.... xxxxx

I suggested this too as the doctors can't know everything and I'd rather go to a specialist too.

Knowing her though it'll take her another 6 months before she goes

I had a quick look at some pictures of folliculitis, but it looks more like spots doesn't it?.. her skin doesn't look like that and folliculitis looks raised and hers isn't so I'm not sure

Actually yes it is raised, lot on my mind hun...sorry,I think it def looks like something rubbing but keep us posted.x

Just a quick update ... I found the very same rash on the back of my neck this weekend (no it's not what you are thinking you dirty geeks:)

I know how I got it, it was the tag from my new top rubbing against my skin and it was annoying me all day.

I was really surprised to see the same type of rash come up on my skin... it too looks like burst blood vessels, but unlike my friend, mine has faded after just one day.

Babsann you were right!!.. she must be doing or wearing something that's rubbing off her leg :smack:
