Where do you all stand on patch testing?

This a reply to my email from BABTAC's membership manager that I received today. I asked concerning Salon Systems and also about the paper test kits that a client can take away with them. I think this resolves things for BABTAC members, especially those using Salon Systems.

The accepted practice is that we patch test every new client the first
time they have the treatment. Up until now, we have assumed that is
sufficient in terms of safety and insurance cover however, recently, some
confusion has arisen after some manufacturers stated that professionals
should be patch testing every client, every time they have the treatment.
While manufacturers' literature, instructions, manuals don't say this
explicitly, when asked for clarification, manufacturers are verbally (or
via email) confirming that clients should be patch tested every time they
have the treatment.

Obviously, patch testing every time is not ideal but neither are we
willing to jeopardise our reputation, not to mention our client's health,
so what does this mean for the professional? When asked about this issue
Salon Systems replied via email stating, "We'd recommend that a patch test
is carried out before each and every application because it is possible to
become sensitive to a product even though someone might be a regular
user." However, this isn't included in their official instructions so,
where do you lie when it comes to insurance?

I contacted BABTAC who were not surprised to hear that this issue had come
up. In fact, they are currently rewriting and updating their Good Practice
Guide and have included this issue in it. After speaking with BABTAC they
have contacted their insurance brokers who have confirmed, that in these
instances the broker will accept the recommendation of BABTAC over the
manufacturer. This means that, if you are following the already defined
regulations regarding patch testing which are testing 24 hours before
first treatment, testing before a change in medical history, testing after
hormonal changes due to pregnancy or menopause, testing before a change in
preparation (i.e. new supplier, new ingredients) and testing after a 12
month interval between treatments and you have signed client record cards
to be kept for seven years, then you are covered.

Just to clarify, BABTAC's insurance providers have confirmed that they
will accept BABTAC's guidance on this issue and BABTAC have recommended
that as long as the above patch testing guidelines listed above have been
followed, then you are covered. Failing to patch test every client every
time will not result in your insurance being invalid, as long as you
follow the above guidelines. BABTAC's insurance providers have accepted
this recommendation.

However, it is important to note that this applies only to BABTAC.
Professionals covered by other insurance providers will need to check with
their individual providers and confirm the regulations of their individual
policies.





Just to let you know that we wouldn't consider clients taking a patch test
kit home as having effectively done a patch test, for instance they may
say they did a patch test on themselves when they hadn't.
 
The treatments that we would recommend you patch test for are;


Peel treatments

OMG, patch test for peel treatments?? Since when? How is this going to work??
Where to patch test, behind the ear?? How? Leave it on then wash it off?? Crazy...
What about if the manufactures does not require patch test before peel treatment?
What about product we use with facials? Anyone can react to anything...

Well surely you would give them the patch test before they left and tell them to do the home kit patch test a day or two before their next appointment as then you will still be able to see the tint on their skin and know that they have done it.
I am not a fan of these generic testing kits. I like to patch test my clients with the exact same products that I am going to be using on them. They may not react to the generic test but may very well react to an ingredient in your product that is not included in the generic test.
I just don't see the point!


 
Concerning the patch test kit. I did wonder on BABTAC reply, after all you would see the result of their (the clients) patch test on the skin. This is in the case that you had to test the client before each application, having already done the original patch test on their skin. But I suppose the client might not follow our instructions, say if I said you needed to put the patch kit on 48 hrs before the treatments, then they forgot and put it on just before they came out. I would have no way of knowing and it might not be on long enough to cause a reaction.
 
The world is going totally bonkers!!

I think in time, if enough reputable therapists take ELT/EBT off the menu, the manufacturers will soon do an about turn as they won't be selling any product!

I've been doing tinting for over 21 years & in all that time I have had one reaction & the client in question had had a kidney transplant a few years prior so was on numerous medications.

Before we know it, we'll be having to patch test for EVERY product we use.

Bonkers, that's what it is!
 
OK I feel like this is going round in circles, but it seems we're still being given conflicting information.

In the thread in the news section, it says "After speaking with BABTAC they have contacted their insurance brokers who have confirmed, that in these instances the broker will accept the recommendation of BABTAC over the manufacturer. .....

And then gives their guidance. But then after that, in this thread Babtac's 2nd point is to follow manufacturers instructions! So we're back to where we started again.

I'm insured with ABT anyway, but I give up! I'm sticking with whatever it says on the package.
 
As well as Refectocil I use Salon Professional tints.

I almost prefer this brand to Refectocil as they are faster to take and more depth to the colour.

Patch Test Instructions are to apply tint behind the ear or in crook of elbow 24 hours prior to application and 48 if client has a medical condition eg diabetic. If there is a reaction not to use

It doesn't say anything else about anything else!!!!

Just in case anyone missed this on the other thread here is the reply I put with the tints I have;


Ok I have just gone through my tint drawer. I don't know how I've accumulated so many tints seeing as I mainly use Refectocil but here goes;

Refectocil-skin test before every application

Hairwell-No patch test instructions. Just says do not pluck the eyebrows before or after treatment. Doesn't mention about waxing after!

HD Brow tint-patch test at least 24 hours before treatment. It doesn't state every time but HD Brows insist you do it every time. Interestingly it also says that it must be washed off well even though HD Brows tell you to wipe it off with a dry cotton pad.

Hive- This product should not be used at all on clients who; have experienced any reaction to colouring products
Have sensitive, irritated or damaged skin.
A client patch test is advised before treatment.
Doesn't state every time.

Strictly Professional-Patch test is advisable. Again, doesn't state every time.

Thuya-Sensitivity test advisable before use.
