    Tips on staying motivated....

I haven't posted for a while, I opened my nail shop in July and was completely flat out busy, booked three weeks ahead and run completely off my feet! Funny thing about it though, it's starting to really feel like 'work' now. The initial excitement is passed, and the novelty of having 'my very...

    Need Air Brush Help

Medea is the company that I use for supplies and tech support. I've had mine for about 3 months, and honestly, I rarely ever use it except for french tips on natural nails.

    Understaffed and up the creek....

Thanks guys for your replies. I did contact the schools in my area (there's only 2) and all the other schools within a 500km radius. So far no bites.... I'll just keep plugging away, I'm only one person, so I can only do what I can do. I know out of all the possible problems a new salon...

    Understaffed and up the creek....

I have recently, 6 weeks ago, opened a small nail salon. It is only me that works there, but I've been posting for another nail tech since my second week. Rules for qualifications are very strict, and the qualified techs usually leave our small town and head off to the big city-nowhere close...

How long until the perfect nail was achieved?

Any conscientious nail tech will always find some fault with a set of nails. And so we should, noticing and correcting our weaknesses will move us closer to where we want to be. However, that being said, we have to exude enough confidence that our clients come back time and time again...

    Clients occupations???

I have many teachers, ladies who work in retail, beauty therapists, bank tellers, call center employees, retired ladies, a few tradesmen, self-employed, housewives, health inspectors and other government jobs. We live in a very small town.

    Damaged Nails

When I soak off acrylics for my clients I like to give them a hot oil manicure, with a buff and loads of Solar Oil. I either give them a pinkie of Solar Oil to take home, or I sell them a larger size. Her nails will feel naked, and if an efile was used on her NN she will have damage, that...

Returning to work after having baby.

5 weeks? Wow! Our maternity leave in Canada is a year long. I was fortunate enough to have the choice, so I just went back to work a month ago and our baby is 21 months. Enjoy your baby, your clients will come back when you are ready to go back to work.

    Inspirational quote of the day

Can't seem to find who said it....but I've seen it in a few places this week, thought I'd share.

    Inspirational quote of the day

“Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.”

    business advice needed!!

I've been open for a month and I guess you never really know what to expect when you are preparing. Like you, my appointment book was empty before the phone was hooked up. And I've been open for a month and have done 84 appointments so far, AND I'm booked solid for at least the next three...

Did anyone here do a business course

I used to have a personal assistant business and before I opened I took a really in depth entrepreneurial course. I think it was about 4 or 5 months long. When I opened my salon I pulled out all my old notes, and dusted off the old brain....

    Disinfection question - spores

Spores are not only fungi, but can be bacteria (think Anthrax) or plant (think seeds). Spores have a tough outer shell that protects it from unfavorable conditions, such as dust and extreme heat, etc. When conditions become favorable again the spores can reproduce (they are asexual). Again...

    Disinfection question - spores

Only complete sterilization will kill spores-such as the methods used for a hospital operating room. In a salon environment, disinfection is suitable. Comparable to sterilization except it will not kill spores. No, barbicide will not kill spores.

    Fish pedicures

My first reaction was "OMG!" but then, I thought...hmm...you can't get a 'greener' pedicure! I've brought it up with my clients a few times this week during regular conversation and surprisingly they ALL said, "I'd try that!" Maybe I should check into this a little more.....

TPTW....Do we have to 'LIKE' our clients!

Great thread! I am a people person, for the most part. I enjoy listening as everyone has a story to tell. As long as they are talking I smile and nod and throw in a question occasionally. There is something to be said in our line of work about being the sounding board. People tend to open...

    Chemotherapy and acrylics

Does anyone have advice for a client who has finished chemo, and let her nails grow out, but now I'm having a problem with keeping the acrylic from lifting. Wednesday I gave her a full set of sculpts and by Friday all ten were off. She said each one lifted. I'm stumped.... I did my...

    How is your business

10 appointments per day!!!! Wow! You are a superstar! Tell us your secrets, please? How do you fit them all in? A new set takes me about 1 ½ hours, a fill about an hour, a pedicure is 1 h 10 mins and a manicure is 50 minutes. I just don't think I could squeeze anymore clients in at the...

    How is your business

I've just opened about three weeks ago and it's been go-go-go ever since. I have 4 or 5 clients a day, and like Martin usually work straight through. The majority of my clients are rebooking and as of right now my book is steady for at least the next 6 weeks or so. I do feel a bit...

    Red blisters..help??

Not being a doctor, honestly, I can't give proper medical advice......... But, as a nail tech, I would say that she has either come into contact with something in her everyday life-or, perhaps more likely, she has become sensitive to the new brand. Once cured, there is nothing that should...
