    'Service Industry'

I might also add that I got a mixture of A and B grades in Maths, English and Science GCSEs, and my hairdressing tutor actually asked me why was I at hair college and not going to Uni. So it comes from both sides. Ridiculous!

    'Service Industry'

This is ridiculous. I wrote a long reply and then deleted, I'm lost for words! Unfortunately, this is completely believable! I was on the receiving end of someone like this; however I was wrongly placed on the academic pathway at school because I was capable, rather than being placed in...

    Payroll

I do it all myself, and use Sage. It's brilliant, and at £6 per month, it does everything I want it to. Sends HMRC the info they need, creates payslips that you can print off or email to staff. I think they do a months free trial too so you can have a look and see if it's decent. Their...

Is this a good set up?

I think when you're looking to start in business, it's always a good idea to look at the best, and worst possible outcome. The lady before you may have left completely innocently, but it would be something I would be questioning. And if you decide to go for it, be a bit cheeky and see how...

    Getting frustrated now

Echoing what has been said before: Tell this client that you don't feel like you're the right therapist for her, and recommend she starts seeing another. Banner Penguin has worded it perfectly. You don't need the stress or the cost in petrol!!

    Ellisons VAT Free?

If it helps, Salon Services is VAT free tomorrow. As I'm hair, I've no idea if that's of any use to you!

What do you love/hate about being self employed?

Great thread idea! Love: Having no one to answer to, having the last word, the flexibility it will hopefully one day give me. Also that I'm better off financially than I ever have been working for someone else, and my business has only been open for a year. Don't love: The flexibility I don't...

    My daughter's prom-so proud!

Beautiful! Bet you're proud to show her off!

    Marketing for home salon?

Check out Lynn Bakers thread on how to promote your business. There LOADS of ideas there, and anything can be adapted to suit a home salon!

    Over 19 apprenticeships, college days?

Are you even an apprentice when you're doing level 3? Technically, you're qualified and I was of the understanding doing L3 was further education, rather than an apprenticeship. I would ask your college if you can be paid apprentices wage or if your salon should be paying you at least NMW.

    What's your opinion on swearing?

I'm not offended by swearing in conversation. I don't swear very much, although probably more than some. I draw the line if there are children around, or if the circumstance warrants you to not be turning the air blue! And as long as it's not directed at me, that's fine too!

    Trip to London

If you haven't booked trains/accommodation yet, I can absolutely recommend SuperBreak. They're brill! Always very reasonably prices and they include the train tickets in your booking. They also don't put you on a specific train so you can choose (there are certain restrictions). As an example...

    Healthy recipes let's share!

I like to make healthy versions of more unhealthy food that I can't live without! Healthy rice- grate a head of cauliflower and toast off in a dry frying pan-usually only takes a couple of minutes. Use this anywhere you would usually use rice- with currys, or chilli con carne. I've even had it...

Found the perfect premises for massage clinic, but it's next to a beauty salon

Yeah, I would introduce yourself, make general chit chat and be a good neighbour. I've done this with all the shops local to me- some of them have became clients! It also is nice to have a sense of community, and know that they'll be keeping an eye on your place when you're not there (and you do...

Found the perfect premises for massage clinic, but it's next to a beauty salon

I think you're over thinking it. Unless the owner of next door is a total gossip and unwarranted superb*tch, you have nothing to worry about with regards to her talking about you in a negative way. Don't give her anything to be negative about! Be confident in your skills, and in yourself! The...

Found the perfect premises for massage clinic, but it's next to a beauty salon

Hi! I've got a barbershop- there is one other barbers and 5 salons in the local area. It didn't even cross my mind to ask their opinion on my proposed business before I opened. Why? Because it's absolutely none of their business- it's mine! Of course, I checked them out, to see if they'd be...

A little advice need for a newbie please

Hi Becky! Firstly, welcome to the site. I'm so sorry you lost your mam, I can't even imagine what that's like. You absolutely don't sound like a spoilt brat- quite the opposite. You're making your mam proud and you'll continue to do so! Don't let being young put you off being your own boss...

Lino flooring in salon beauty/sunbed rooms-thoughts and experiences?

I love having lino flooring! As others have said it's hygienic and so easy to clean. I have wood effect too, and people are shocked when I tell them it's Lino and not real wood! I realise this isn't the best photo, but you get the idea!

    Small loans anyone?

I've just got a business credit card for things like this. I'm with barclays and they've given me £5000 credit, 3 months interest free on purchases and a good interest rate (I can't think of what it is off the top of my head). Something you could speak to your bank about possibly? Hope this...

Turned up for training course to be told it was cancelled on Friday!

I would be going for everything they've got about this! You've spent thousands on new products with them (and haven't cancelled it out of frustration- many including myself would have!), lost a WHOLE WEEKS worth of takings, and had to spend money on travelling to the course. At the very least...
