Never does an Oscar night pass without some controversy and who would have thought that this year, it would be over just one hairstyle on the red carpet?
Actress, Zendaya, rocked the red carpet with a glorious head full of waist-length, faux locks. Having sported a pixie cut the week before, this was a transformation but one that gave a great opportunity to give natural hair a moment in the spotlight.
It's a shame that E! reporter Giuliana Rancic didn't see it that way. During E!s Fashion Police Oscars edition show, Rancic commented on Zendayas red-carpet hairdo, saying that her dreadlocks made Zendaya look like she smelled of "patchouli oil and weed."
Needless to say, social media erupted in a frenzy of anger calling Rancic's joke racist, xenophobic, distasteful, and ignorant (and citing Rancics previous praise of Kylie Jenner for rocking dreadlocks as hypocrisy).
Eventually Zendaya herself issued a lengthy yet eloquent response reminding the reporter why recycling these old stereotypes is offensive.
