An investigation by the BBC has discovered that almost two thirds of tanning salons in the north east are exposing clients to dangerous UV radiation levels.
In Newcastle, trading standards discovered that eighty four per cent of sun beds broke radiation guidelines emitting up to three times the legal standard. Eighty per cent of salons in North Tyneside did not comply and in Durham sixty two per cent of beds were illegal.
The findings have been described as 'shocking' by dermatologist Dr. Rob Ellis. "UV at those doses is a carcinogen," he said.
The legal limit is 0.3 watts per sq m but in some salons levels of 1.02 watts per sq m had been recorded.
Ellis commented that tanning salons "do seem to be trying to produce the strongest and most powerful lamps. The lamps are three times as strong - does that equate to three times the skin cancer risk? I think it could potentially be a lot more than that."
