Following the Keogh review, Coventry University is the first higher education institution to offer an accredited training programme for the cosmetics industry. Described as a 'ground-breaking course' the move comes after the recent NHS review called for more rigorous monitoring and regulation of the industry.

The recent PIP implant disaster triggered a full review of the cosmetics industry and it notably questioned the fact that there are currently no restrictions on who can administer dermal filler treatments, laser hair removal or Botox injections.

Coventry University has responded swiftly to this and developed the new foundation module in aesthetic practice in conjunction with the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN). The curriculum starts in October and has been created based on the standards drawn up between the BACN and the Royal College of Nursing.

Cosmetic Nurse practitioner, Tracey Nunn-Gribby, is among the first to sign up to the course and, after 22 years in the industry, she believes that such a qualification is well-overdue.

"The industry wants tightening up and regulating and I think its fantastic that this course has been started to protect the public. Coventry is leading the way in this 100 per cent."

The module can be studied as a stand-alone course or can be incorporated as part of a full degree. Alison Bardsley, course director for non-medical prescribing says, "The lack of regulation and proper training standards for people carrying out cosmetic interventions are areas of increasing concern for the public, so the advent of this course makes a significant step towards an improved framework for the industry and the introduction of a long-overdue element of control by health standards specialists."

All enquiries regarding the course can be emailed to [email protected]

Until then....geek on!
