We all know about the French and their love of snails. Normally though, this involved cooking them in wine and garlic. Not so for Louis-Marie Guedon who is jumping on the snail goo bandwagon and developing the first (and very secret) method for harvesting snail slime on an industrial scale.

The slime has become more and more popular in recent years as it contains collagen, glycolic acids, antibiotics and whole host of other useful compounds. The regenerating and healing properties have meant that many cosmetics companies have started including it as an ingredient in their skincare ranges.

Guedon, who resides in Champagnaolles in the west-central region of Charente-Maritime has developed a secret method that allows him to harvest the slime on a huge scale. In fact, he hopes to harvest no less than fifteen tonnes next year and boy does he have a market. Not only has he already secured two contract with local labs, he's also done a deal with a Paris-based company who mixes cosmetics for some of the biggest consumer brands. "This client has already ordered three tonnes of slime!"

Guedon is no stranger to the way of the snail. He's been raising snails for more than a quarter of a century. "I've already been producing the slime for three years but manually." Now, his new technique allows him to increase that exponentially. While he remains tight-lipped about the method he does explain that it requires two containers. He also uses salt but the snails are not killed.

Whether you think the snail slime fad is just that or something that's here to stay, you can deny his enthusiasm!

Until then...geek on!
