Hiya

This is going to sound daft but I have a chest infection and i am still currently getting over it. I have not missed a day of work even though I have a sick line because my boss said if i used it, she would tell me to work my notice as she cannot allow for illness during the run up to christmas!

Am i wrong to feel sensitive? I really do feel that a few days off (covered by my sickline) would be beneficial to me rather than having to "suck it up" and "get on with it".

Am i being too sensitive? I didn't get sick to spite anyone, I can't help it!

I know its not an ideal situation just now, but i think im spreading germs to everyone and tanning makes me cough even more than what I am...its not helping me!

I would love it if a salon owner/manager could even reply and tell me what they think! OR has anyone else had this problem in their workplace?

I am terriffied to call in sick

I've always worked through illness; I tend to phone the clients to warn them of my illness & give them the chance to cancel in case they're about to go on holiday, or have a newborn baby etc. I've always been like this, whether employed, self-employed & now with my own business.

It's a difficult one as I can see it from both sides; you don't want to work ill, but with high overheads in a difficult financial situation a salon owner can't afford to lose money.

if your ill your ill!! and you are entitled to time off and SSP regardless of the time of year or how busy the salon is :irked::irked: and for your employer to say that he or she is breaking employment law:irked:

If you have a doctors note they cant sack you. Make sure you get one and if a doctor says you are not to work then you can have the time to get better rather than drag it out and end up getting more ill anyway. Thats what id do people get ill its a fact of life especialy at this time of year if they dont have a policy in place to manage if someone gets sick then thats bad practice. xx

aww sweet you must be suffering xxxx
I have just had to shut my salon for 3 days due to me having swine flu really knocked me off my feet, couldnt even stand up. Felt awful letting people down normally would struggle on but this got me good. My clients are lovely one even coming to my home with home made soup to make sure i was eating. I didnt have anyone to fall back on due to staffing issues (also trust issues).
If you were my staff I would understand If ur ill you are ill at the end of the day, as long as it wasnt a reoccurring thing. I would want you in full working order with a bounce in your step.
I have just sacked a trainee who was with me for three weeks and out of the three weeks she only worked six days as she was constantly im ill, I cant reach, I cant do this , I cant do that, she would be high as a kite on strong painkillers and I couldnt allow her any where near my clients she was a liability.
Hope you get better soon chick (sorry my post turned into a rant)

you can self certify for 5 days? without a doctors note this type of thing makes my blood boil !! you work and pay ni and tax hence you are entitled to sick pay,TAKE IT!!
there are so many false claims of benefits in Britain costing billions each year,Where the claimants pay nothing into the system and are often new immagrants
And you who pays taxes and are gainfully employed are made to feel insecure by an unscrupulous employer!!!
my advice would be go sick and sue if she sacks you !!

I got sacked for having 1 day off sick even though i took a sick note in..she thought i was fakin yet i had a sick note!!!!

Wasn't in a salon though so wasn't like they were loosing money.

I wouldn't sack someone for being of sick with genuine illness. Some staff do seem to take lots of odd days off sick and I do let people who are off a lot go. If this is the first time you have been ill in many months, I would say your boss is being unreasonable. If you have a couple of days every other month, then be careful, lots of people want your job right now.

I once forced myself to work with a nasty cough and ended up in casualty as I was coughing up blood, I ended up with a bronchitus type infection and was extremely ill for several weeks. I don't mean to scare you but you are not doing anyone or yourself any favours forcing yourself to work when you are ill and infectious, you need to rest up and get better. Get a sicknote and explain your situation to your doctor this way (as already said) you are covered legally. I would seriously consider as well whether this is the type of employer you want to work for as what they are doing is unethical and very callous.

Hope you get better soon

God and I thought I had it bad. I have had to take 2 days off work (unpaid) as i ended up in hospital on oxygen from a virus, chest infection and tonsillitis. My boss wasn't impressed but what can you do!!
If you have evidence to support your illness then i'm sure they cannot sack you.
It just really agrivates me how all of these clients are coming in all flued up, not worried that they will give it to you. The managers put nothing in place to stop this so of course we are going to get ill.
I think I would rather my therapists not come in. The amount of times i have disturbed my client whilst doing a massage, to have a coughing fit. It's just not professional.
If you need time off hun, I would take it and support it with a doctors note. If they threaten to sack you, take them to court!!
I do hope you feel better soon xxx

Your boss is being completely unreasonable. If you have a couple of days to recuperate you'll be back to full form and performing your best, whereas now you'll probably be doing a worse service because you just can't concentrate. You could also pass it on to the clients which won't do the salon any favors.

I once had to have a week off as i hurt my back. I was doing 8 full body massages a day and i think i got lazy with my stance. All of a sudden it went, i couldn't sit or stand on my own, let alone drive to work. My boss was not happy and told all the other staff horrible things about me faking it, but didn't fire me.

I would take your time off. You are entitled to it.

If she can't do without you for 3 days, how will she be able to fire you and do without you all the way to xmas?

Hi Lilly

You cant be sacked for taking sick time even if you boss thinks you are faking it she has to proof it and also has to take appropriate displinary action, sacking you on the spot for taking sick time is not something that she can do it is not gross misconduct and to be sacked there and then it has to be gross misconduct. We had a member of staff take 2 weeks off unauthorised (she just didnt turn up for 2 weeks no contact etc) we employ a employment law specialist and we were unable to end her employment the furtherest we could take it was final written warning.

If you have a sick note and still come into work then insurance for the treatments services you provide is void so she is leaving her open to more problems.

I agree its a nightmare to cope with staffing levels due to illness etc but its something that just has to worked round, having been on both sides there is nothing worse than feeling bullied into coming into work when you are really poorly and does nothing for staff moral.

Hope you are feeling better

If a doctor signs you off work then you shouldn't go to work.

Let's say you DO work and have an accident (say, trip over something and crack your head open), you could claim against your employer. BUT, she/he could find that their employers liability insurance will not cover the accident as you shouldn't have been there (the doctor said so) - it could end up being nastily expensive for the employer as she/he is aware that you are poorly and that the doc said you should stay home!

Unfortunately they tend to contradict themselves!. I work in a spa and a while back one of the girls was ill and the customer complained to the general manager. For a while they said that if you are ill then you shouldn't come in to work but that soon wore off! They are now saying the opposite! I think your employers are probably treading on dodgy ground, just make sure you have a doctor's note to support yourself.
